I have no problem with the general concept of a lock back knife. I do own a few, but none of them are my favorite.
Two Bucks, a 110 and a 112; I carried a 110 for years as an EDC work knife,. By EDC, I mean whenever I put on my pants. But it's a pretty basic design with unpeanned bras pins holding it all together. In my experience , they lose up with use. Today my EDC is a Leatherman Wave. The blades thumb-deploy if I am not in a hysterical hurry , and they are liner locked. I may replace that with an ARC, but that is aspirational at this point.
I would note that a frame locking knife has fewer parts to the locking mechaism itself. This must mmake it esier to produce and assemble. I have taken apart 110s in he past and there are parts that have to be arranged and connected under tension. While a frame lock slab is just water-jet cut and the locking arm bent to shape. I don't know just how that is done, but it seems simple in concept.
Frankly, I think that the basic back-lock is a decent design concept. It can be as strong as any other locking concept and better than some. I have an exquisite little William Henry that has a button lock. I'd never trust that to hold for any job more strenuous than opening an envelope.
These have turned out to be my favorite lock backs, albeit Tri-Ad variety. I've carried the XL Voyager for years and like it for its excellent do-all knifey-ness. It's very slicey, but I'm mindful of the tip, so I often carry the SR1 tanto, finding the secondary point surprisingly useful.
Yep
After a month since I said my Police K390 is my fave I wanted to add an honorable mention for the Cold Steel Voyager ! ! !
I have several , mostly the Large .
The heat treated 6061 alu liners really seem to me to be a brilliant idea . Very strong and LIGHT !
I've modded the crap out of mine. Modded the locks to release with less effort . . . modded the blades in some surprising ways (but kept some factory` stock)
Voyagers are GREAT KNIVES !
I haven't bought any lockback knives for myself, when I got into knives I was into fixed blades and my first folder was a Sage 5, but I have recently ordered an Endura 4 for a friend and I really enjoyed that one, so much so that I considered keeping it for myself so I guess my favourite lockback is the Endura 4
I have a nice 5160 Buck 112 that I enjoy but it’s an anchor in the pocket. I have to say the Smith&Sons Mudbug has to be the best lock back I have. It’s more of a traditional pattern but that increases its appeal to me.
