Favorite big/small knife combo.

I have always favored the big knife small knife combo in the woods. I have used a MMHW 10" camp knife and HUnter model SAK together for quite a few years. Later I used a Livesay HKR and small Freer blade that was ground from a file. My favorite is a Busse BM and Mean Street. The MS is the best small fixed blade I have used.

If 2 is good, 4 is better.

Big knife

Newt Livesay Recon Machete
or
6 inch bowie of my own make

Small knife

Camillus dual lock two blade trapper (no longer in production though I would love to get another)

and/or

SAK
or

Gerber multipliers

I prefer a large Spyderco Wegner accompanied by a small Spyderco Wegner, Jr and a Fallkniven F1. As soon as they become available, that triplet will be backed up by a Becker Bush Hog.

It's not the pace of life that concerns me, It's the sudden stop at the end.

Currently, I'd probably go with a Busse 7 or 9 (still testing which performs better for me) and a Leatherman Wave, or maybe a Gerber multitool, depending on my mood for the day.

CJ,

Is that the 9 I sold ya on Ebay? How's it doing?

I currently favor a SAK rucksack (if a multiblade thing is allowed) and an HI Khukuri, but waiting on a Brute from BKT to try out. If I'm going with high end small blades, my custom RJ Martin Trek in CPM420V can't be beat. Of course, my Dozier Arkansas Toothpick was tearing the bark off a dead tree for tinder with sidewayd prying the other day, and then still sliced and diced everything I put in it's path. It's a close second for small blade choice.

Brian, I never think of Doziers as pryers but I forgot about his tactical line. I held one of those toothpicks a year or so ago but can't remember a lot about it. Is it a pretty stout little blade?

Hoodoo,

It's a surprisingly stout blade for any size. It's a Loveless-inspired design, thickest along the sides of the blade in stead of the spine, with a false edge on top. This keeps it stout while retaining a great cutting angle, almost like a flat grind.

My choices have changed over the years due to my past mistakes and successes.
For extended time in the woods (more than 3 days) I choose a SAK with a saw-blade and an 18" machete or a small axe.

Big blade/small blade (really medium) combo... Livesay RCM/Livesay Air Assault, SAK woodsman for backup. If its got to be ONE blade to do it all, Busse SH II. If it has to be a folder it would be a large Sebenza, and if I'm doing this on the cheap, I'd have to take my new Mora 2000!

Buck Ranger in back pocket or on belt, plus a Victorinox Rambler and Photon on the key ring.

busse SH-E and camillus talon! I picked the talon over the mean street because it's so much thinner...even the "lean" is pretty chunky, and if my small knife were my ONLY knife I'd lean the other way,but with a big knife to handle the really hairy stuff the talon handles everything else, for a loooong time, and hardly weighs anything.I always have my leatherman in my belt buckle too...

Brent, what is the stock thickness of the Talon? The Lean Mean is 3/16 and yeah, it's still a little chunky but not bad. I have a 154cm Talon on order though, and can't wait to compare the two knives.

I just got back from a 10 day winter warfare exercise in the Rocky Mountains. I carried a Becker Companion and a Gerber Scout. I attached a pouch to the Companion with 550 cord wrapped around the sheath. It was quite handy as I could access the scout easily as it was lower than my belt line and could be grapped without lifting up my layers to get at the knife. Was very happy with the combination.

Big: CR Project 1, A1 or a Big Busse
Med: (assuming you have the big) BM Nimravus or Buck Pathfinder
Sm: Sebenza or SERE2K

I assume the Leatherman Supertool and SAK Rucksack that simply are do not count.

Jeff, that sounds like a great idea. Thanks for the tip.
