The other day, I did a lot of searching of back threads in order to find out which carbon-steel Mora folks seem to like the best. The results were varied, but some top contenders seemed to be the Eriksson 510, the 780 Craftsman Triflex, and the 840 Clipper. However, I thought it might be interesting to do a poll and see how the numbers shake out. In the thread itself, comments about why you prefer a certain model would be helpful and appreciated.

I simply put up the #1 and #2 without specifying the laminated steel version or not. Please feel free to point to laminated or not in the thread if you choose one of these models.

Please note that this poll is only for the carbon-steel Moras. After this one has run a while, it might be fun to take the top contenders and pitch them against some of the stainless models, including the 2000 and the 2010.

Edited to add:

Today, I ordered some carbon Moras to try out. Got a little carried away, but with the variety, my efforts should make for some interesting comparisons and contrasts over the next few months. Also, I picked up an extra 510 for a giveaway I'll do here when I hit 25K. Keep an eye out.

I only have the 711 and the 780. I voted the 711 because I haven't had much chance to put the 780 through its paces yet. Can't believe I didn't discover these great knives until last year.

Mine is a close call between the erickson 510

but I love this one, Kellam's all purpose knife, even more:

Thanks for the infamous X-ray picture, Joezilla. I don't know if mods can edit polls, but I didn't remember that the 711 & 911 were Eriksson blades until I saw the x-ray again. If a mod wants to put "Ericksson" in front of the 711 and 911 designations, that might help some folks.

Guys, by all means, post those pics of users too if you've got 'em.

I find wood handles to be warmer and more comfortable for extended use, especially woodcraft....

But that Kellam/Martiini puukko looks sweet!:D

I really, really like my 510s. The blade size, shape, and handle come together into a really handy package that's proved very useful. The 510 also comes with the nicest sheath of all of the Moras, IMHO. The steel is EXCELLENT. If you manage to break one of these things, you're doing something really, really wrong.

When I know I'm going to be doing something that's going to be hard on a knife, a 510 is what I usually grab. They're so inexpensive, I don't feel bad abusing them. So far, they've held up great. I carry a 510 in my bag every day, and have one that sits on the desk in my office, behind my keyboard all the time. I keep a couple extra as spares. Great little knives. I've cut the belt loop off of the one I carry around, so I can just toss it in my pocket and go.

So far, the poll is pretty well in line with the research I did, but I didn't anticipate as many fans for the wooden handled versions.

The wooden handle is undoubtedly the most common version at primitive skills events. I think people just like the wood feel.

I've seen a website ( forget where) , showing that the wooden handles Moras/Frosts are hollow inside the tang area , and the only real strength is from the ferrule and the end metal hollow retaining pin. The solution was to remove a 1/2" section at the rear , and fill it in with epoxy.

BTW... My Moras (3)are all 510's , with the bottom guard reduced by sanding it down.

You are probably referring to Old Jimbo's site:

And my favorite carbon steel Mora is the #2 1/2 (with the 5" blade), which I got from Ragnar.

I like the lam moras the best they seem to have the best edge retention and more resistance to edge chipping. The triflex are about even in performance but I had one that I don't think was treated properly and after a few sharpenings I was left with nothing but soft steel. I stick with the wood handle models the most because I perfer the shape of the handle, its very comfortable in the hand.
