Favorite cheap beater knife?

I have always been tempted to get one of the cheap carbon srks. Is the handle a comfortable one?

Absolutely.

At about $35 "On Sale", you'd be remiss not to put one or two in your collection.

For my money, they're without equal in terms of "value". The SK-5 is quite wonderful as far as edge retention and ease of sharpening...and tough as a $2 Filet Mignon.

I regret not picking up the 3v Italian version when it was 99 bucks on midway.

This “Ausus“ from StatGear I bought in Sept 2020. It was listed as a regular price of 40 with an available code taking 24 off the price so for $16 I figured it was worth taking a chance on this ugly thing. To me it looked like a part that fell off some machinery in a warehouse or something.
Well it turned out to be a heavy, ugly, but useful thing to have laying around the house. I never carry it, just mainly use it as a box opener and in general ripping stuff up. It’s built like a tank and I’m sure I could run it over with my truck and suffer no damage besides a bent clip. I probably use it 3-4 times a week for something. Best $16 I ever spent on a knife type thing.

Im not sure people would consider it cheap, but the gerber Strongarm is my go to beater. I keep it in my boat. Dont care if its wet, dirty, or abused. I have to say its been a very reliable blade.

Not sure how to respond .... my dedicated beaters are not cheap - intentionally, otherwise what's the point ?

My most frequent/dedicated beaters (and they show it) are Spyderco Ti PM3 in M390, GB2 and Manix2 & Hinderer XM18, and fixed are CPK Dek1, FK2, and Busse/SwampRat RMD and MMD.

A lot of my knives have turned up in this thread. They are good hard- working tools, but I don’t think of most of them as beaters. The one that comes to the fore in that regard is the Hultafors GK. That one and my old Anza, no model but it looks like a precursor to the WK5.

My choice, ime brilliant balanced knife for the money I'm thinking of buying another. The 420hc steel has surprised me pleasantly too.

The Tangram Santa Fe is the best $25 knife I've ever owned. I've owned a couple of them now and I've given several to people as gifts. One guy used it as his solo EDC for over a year and only stopped because he lost it out on the trail.

It feels good in hand. It snaps out nicely. The blade shape is fantastic. The thin blade sails through cardboard. The Acuto 440 gets decent edge retention and is stainless enough to totally neglect. There is no other knife that I was so sad to see discontinued.

My honest opinion:
Folders - Opinel Carbon, eventually Cold Steel SR1 Lite or Voyager.

Fixed blades - Mora Carbon and Glock knife. Here, for 50€ you can buy both of them at local hunting store, and you'd be hard pressed to break either. 33€ - Glock knife, 16€ - Mora Robust.

They're cheap but just work.
