Favorite Fish

Live in Manila. Mountains northwest would be the Bataan-Olonggapo-Zambales area. That region's fishing industry is currently suffering because fishermen can no longer go to their usual fishing shoals. chinese gunboats are turning them away.

I heard that there is some conflict with the Chinese on some islands (Spratlys?) to the SE of Hainan Island. Supposedly the Chinese have taken over the atolls and are building an airbase on one of them. The Vietnamese are supposed to be PO's about it as are the Filipinos.

When I was there I lived in a small village named San Miguel (like the popular PI beer). It was located a couple hours north of the Subic Bay/Olonggapo area, in the hills to the east. I got to Manila a few times and was amazed at the stories of what the PI people suffered through during WWII when I toured some of the historical sites.

While there I scuba dived off the coast in the S. China Sea. It was some of the clearest water I have ever seen. One of the most interesting things I saw were the water-filled caves along the shore filled with hundreds of beautiful small tropical fish and big triangular shaped snails attached to the cave walls. We collected the snails and took them back with us and cooked them, our version of Filipino escargot. I saw sea snakes, not aggressive toward us divers, and one time saw one of those giant man-eating clams. It took me a minute to figure out what it was as it was completely surrounded by sponges and corals. All you could see were the lips it extrudes over the edge of it's shell which looked like a long, bright blue-green ribbon someone had dropped over the reef.

My favorite fish to catch are the ones dumb enough to bite the bait.
For eating, I like crappie, bluegill/sunfish, catfish, and the occasional Gar.
Beer batter and fried.

I wouldn't even know where to start. How do you clean and cook them. There used to be a lot of them on the Florida reefs but they have have been decimated by guys catching them and shipping them to Japan.

Stepped on one of those once, barefoot. Makes for a very memorable experience.
