Favorite Horror Movies?

Hey I never did get finish Jacob's Ladder! Thanks for reminding. I also prefer psych-messing and conditioning over gore-and-FX any day and this film definitely qualifies!

I'd just like to point out there's a spoiler in the movie that a knife knut can spot. The first time I saw it, I thought it was just an error by the prop guy and took it with a grain of salt...

An American Werewolf in London

Thats a classic, great movie

"Shallow grave" is not a bad movie, sort of a horror film.

"Zombie flesh eaters" is one of my favorite Zombie films. IMO Its better than the blatant commedy ones.

"Audition" is another good Japanese horror film. "versus" is also a pretty good film but has a stupid ending.

I must say that since childhood, I never found most "horror" genre films to be frightening.
Mind, I loved all the "big bug" films of the 50s, and of those Them (the big ants) was likely the best done. Don't know if those qualify as "horror" or "sci-fi"....Certainly the science was a bit dodgy.
I also recall all those creepy things from that period; The House On Haunted Hill, all those Vincent Price things....
As I child of the Cold War, I always hold out for On The Beach. Very understated, no on-screen nuclear destruction...But absolutely terrifying.

Not sure just how over the top you want, personally I haven't hit my limit yet and I have the August Underground movies from Toe Tag productions, those might be a bit much for most. Of course there are currently a bunch of Asian horror available if you don't mind sub-titles...I love the suble horror they use. If you want good horror, slasher, gore I would recommend a couple:

House of 1000 Corpses

For something funny try Cemetery Man

if ya want your lady friend to snuggle extra close to you..."session 9" should do it. creepy and quite weird.

The Saw films didn't really strike me as belonging in the horror genre, more action/thriller, that's why I didn't list them although I liked them. To me a horror film should make it difficult to go to sleep at night or it should really disturb me like the August Underground films did. I will say there are different types of horror, some truly horrific while others can border on being comedy. Some of the best of late have been Indies or foreign (particularly Asian and Italian). Broken is a much under-rated indie film that really made me think simply because I know people like this are out there.

Speaking of sub-titled movies, is anybody familiar with A Chinese Ghost Story, it's one of my favorites... Highly recommended! (not a strict horror movie in the American sense, more like kung-fu/horror/romantic comedy)

Mr. Frost is a good psychological horror flick. Just a little hard to find. One of my favs.

Excorcist, scariest movie I've ever seen

John Carpenters the Thing (I had a Siberian Husky, and that scene really freaked me out, I watched it with him one night)

Descent is probably the most recent really scary movie, to watch in the dark anyway

Not a true horror pic, but Jaws was scary back when I was a kid. The Jaws theme music..

Original Poltergeist (sp?). "They're Heeeeeerrrreee". Is a classic. Again, something from my childhood. The little girl was just like my next door neighbor.

The Shining. Not sure Jack was acting..;)

Audition is a great movie. Very disturbing. :D
