Favorite knife steel

Fixed blades: INFI
Folders: CPM154

looking for a microtech right now and i'm really hoping it comes with one of their better steels not the lower quality ones they use on occasion

I hope similar steel will be available for other companies.

Even if you used the exact same steel as what Jerry uses for INFI, you wouldn't get the same results. The proprietary heat treat has at least as much to do with the strength of INFI as does the steel itself, and while the makeup of the steel is known, there's nothing but guesses on the heat treat

I do believe Microtech is currently using ELMAX for most of, if not all of their stuff. If you can get a new production run in ELMAX I think you will be rather pleased.

Really like the M390 on my BM 581 and 586. Seriously want a blue Para 2 from next years release.

My Endura's ZDP less so as I find it noticeably more difficult to sharpen.

I'm impressed with the smooth and very sharp edge I can get on my 950 Rift's 154CM, same with the S35VN on the Para 2.

And anything Damascus, cos its pretty :)

The best knife I ever had in S30V was a Spyderco Military. That was a really great knife, but I had let to go to someone that wanted it worse than I did. That knife ended up going to Afghanistan so I think it kept doing good things for it's owners.

I currently have a knife I made in M390 I am playing with. I have high hopes for this steel, but I doubt it will knock S90V off it's pedestal.

M390 is a great steel, but no in a direct comparison edge retention wise S90V will beat it. :)

What about CPM M4 @ 64rc vs M390 @62?

*These steels are in the same category with M390@60 and CPM M4 @62.5*
So I just answered my own question with the above hardness values.

I'm still anticipating 4V and it's performance. It has the look of something I would get along with very well.

I will tell you all now that 4V will not knock your socks off in the corrosion resistance arena. It forms micro pits like 3V but will do it about four times faster. I would put corrosion resistance just slightly better than the A11 class steels. It definitely acts like a carbon steel even with all the alloying.

The CTS-204P in my Para 2 has held up wonderfully for me thus far. And nothing beats a fixed blade made from INFI.

Big Chris, is it almost as tough as 3V while as wear resistant as S30V? I'm wondering how it fits in. I've seen the charts but real experiences are usually better IMO.

Back on topic:

Kitchen: AEB-L , white And blue steels, 1084, L6, cpm 154 cpm s35vn

Folder: M4, s90v,s30v,m390.

Hunting: s110v, k294,s90v,M4

Chopper: 3v,1084,L6,S7,M4

Pretty telling that M4 made 3/4 of your categories.

I like M4 a lot. I only have one example of it though.

I also really like CTS-204P.

As far as non "super steels" VG-10 is one of my favorites.
