Favorite Shield?

For me the badge is the classiest, the only large shield I care for is the Remington Bullet Shield...

I especially like this particular one because it goes so well with the etch...

When I was a little kid I wanted to drive a red Peterbuilt dump truck when grew up. Since then I've always thought the mud flap chick was awesome. I've since given up wanting to drive a dump truck for a living but I think the mud flap gal would make a slick shield for a knife. A nice equal end stockman with black jigged scales and that gal on it. Terribly redneck but there it is.

P.s. If I ever win the lottery, I will buy a dump truck right before I buy a Bose knife.

I have to say, shields are something pretty recent in my knife horizon; until I got into American multibladed traditionals, I knew nothing about them, and I didn't miss them.
Now, I just have to agree with Will, I have no favourite shield, cause to me it depends alot on the knife. I would, for example, take a bar shield on a congress, but never on a serpentine jack...and so on. And, on some patterns, I still prefer no shield at all.

These two are my favorite of the shields GEC commonly uses. Wish they would offer them on more of their knives. The cloud shield is actually the reason I chose the walnut 42 over the copperhead bone.

Well, you saved me trouble of taking photos. I, too, have both a GEC Northfield (cloud shield) and a GEC Tidioute (hot dog shield) and find them pretty classy in their simplicity and "aesthetically pleasing" look. They add to the sleekness as they are positioned.

Not that GEC always gets it right for my personal preferences. Despite its many fans, there is absolutely no danger of ever finding me in possession of a knife with the Beavertail shield. Just not my cup of tea. :)

I agree with you Ranchman.

If I ever hit the lottery, I will order that shield from a custom maker, although the wife won't like it.

Gentlemen (Ladies as well)... three pages and no anchorshield of an Ankermesser yet?

Here it comes :D

I love and hate them all equally. The key is to match the right shield, aesthetically always, historically not necessarily, to the pattern and size of that pattern. I have seen way too many otherwise very nice knives, custom and production, only to be ruined in my eyes by poor shield selection.

I agree with Brad, the key is to match the right shield with the right knife. Each shield also has many variations and some I like more than others. Unfortunately, modern knives have little variation. Often the same shields are used over and over and over and over again. Boring!

I like the sowbelly pattern so I like the "bodice" shield. ;) I also like many others... which are unfortunately seldom used on modern knives... lots of good examples in this topic!

Jake, if you have not seen it try to find a copy of "Price Gide to Romance of Knife Collecting", (1978 or 79 Editions) - Mrs. Dewey P. (Lavona) Ferguson. The last 15-20 pages are nothing but shields. Not expensive and you can usually find a copy without too much difficulty.

These are some of my favorites, it would be nice to see them on a modern folder

And to reinforce what was said by others about the preferred shield depending on the knife, while this shield is not one of my favorites, it seems to go well with this knife

That's a lot of shields! I'll look for a copy of the book. Does it give a name for this one?? The one on the left. I've wondered about it... is it a plus size "bodice"? Or something completely different? It's from a bull head. The one on the right is a "bodice" shield from a Remington Sowbelly.

Here's an example of two slight variations of the somewhat uncommon "Bodice" shield. The one on the left is from a New York Knife Co sowbelly. The one on the right is from a Remington sowbelly.

Keeping with the thought a shield should be appropriate for the lines of the knife pattern, this center placed symmetrical shield on the equal end cattle knife, and the bomb shield on the upper end of the serpentine jack are well done. I see a few cattle knives like this with no shield and they look naked. This particular bomb shield became a standard on Schrade's Uncle Henry line of folders.
