Favorite Swiss Army Knife?

I like the Outrider. It has all the features I crave and more. The bladelock is a plus and I prefer the small Phillips screwdriver to the more common big one. The only "flaw", as I see it, is lack of the tiny screwdriver housed inside the corkscrew.

That's kinda tough... so many choices!!

For everyday use, the Compact. Replaces my ancient old Super Tinker, except I give up the Phillips. Oh well.

For outdoors use, the One-Hand Trekker.
(After reading posts over at SOSAK about layer mods, I'm considering swapping out the cap lifter & can opener for the Hunter's combination opener and serrated "gutting" blade, and possibly adding the scissors/Phillips from my Outrider. Oh, and adding a pocket clip, while I'm at it... Now, THAT would be sweet!)

a rare red alox Pioneer, and the Atlas

Are you saying the Red ones are rare? I have 3 new in the box.

Three faves:

* Tourist (84mm version of Spartan) for EDC

* Adventurer for weekend carry, outdoors, etc.

* Classic for ..... well, how can you exclude the Classic!?

But if I had to pick just one it'd be the Tourist everytime.

I've got an alox Bantam in my pocket right now. Probably my favorite. And an "economy" sportman II attached to my keychain (which is so heavy I can no longer carry my keys on it :grumpy:

My favorite is the fieldmaster . My second favorite is the good old tinker.

"That's not a Swiss Army Knife. This is a Swiss Army Knife"

As far as the Wenger vs. Victorinox issue, it's a Wenger.

Hi Bob,

I have to disappoint you. This is not a knife at all, this a bayonet and it is designed to be mounted on an assault rifle - not in your pocket :) . I recognize the bayonet itself (I spend quite some time in the Swiss military) and the sheath, but not the belt carrying fixture (although it does have a Swiss Army "look").

Swiss privates are issued a very basic, silver (not red), Victorinox pocket knife:

As to my personal SAK - the flagship: Vic's SwissChamp XLT (sort of like a SwissChamp and a Cybertool put together).

Cheers,

Tnozh

Well, since it has a blade I think it meets the criteria for being a "knife." I have no idea why some have leather frogs, and some have rubber. Maybe newer issue are rubber?

Now if the question was, "What's your favorite Swiss-Army-Style Pocketknife," I'd have to say the BuckSwiss Trekker. It's my only SAK, so it 'wins' by default. There has been a topic showing that the Wenger BuckSwiss models have very weak springs, but for $9 it's still a decent knife. And I appreciate the Buck-made handles, not slippery smooth like many SAKs.

Best Wishes,
Bob

That's quite possible. I did my basic training (boot camp) in the mid 1980s and them moved on to positions where bayonets are not carried ;)

Also - Switzerland adopted a new, and *far* better (the old one was one louzy and heavy piece of "bovine excreta", specially when you must carry it on top of a heavy backpack across 50km in the Alps), assault rifle since and they might well have used that opportunity to change some gear.

Regards!

Waiter Plus
Glad to see you like it.

The Victorinox 91mm Waiter Plus would be my runner up - as it packs a lot of functions for a knife with just a single layer/backspring -
12 functions as listed by Victorinox (plus one unofficial one, of being able to use the screwdriver corner for Phillips screws)

My favorite is my EDC - which people are sick of seeing pictures of.... :D

Mine is the Explorer. I am now thinking of getting a Yeoman which has about the same functionality in a smaller package.

I have a soft spot for my SwissChamp which I have had for many years, but I don't carry it with me everyday because of its size and weight. Always take it with me on holiday though, has been my long time true and trusted holiday companion. It has served me well - I can't tell you how many uses I have put it to, even used it crack walnuts one Christmas.

I also love my Cybertool 34.

Then there is the SwissTool - not really a "Swiss Army Knife", but is my favourite of the tools on the market. Just got a Spirit, but haven't had it long enough to classify it as a favourite yet.

I own the Swiss Champ and the Recruit. The Recruit doesn't have enough tools, the Swiss Champ has too many. I still like both, and carry the Swiss Champ in my camping gear, that is my favorite right now, but I wouldn't EDC it. I am looking forward to picking up a Ranger.

After many years still carrying a Vic Huntsman, sometimes a Farmer on weekends, or a Craftsman.

Take a look at the SwissChamp XLT which combines the functionalities of both in an amazingly compact tool:

I carry mine in its leather pouch on my belt. For sure the best multi-tool I ever had.

Yes, I have seen this and now they have an even bigger XXLT.

I would like to own one, but only for collector novelty purposes. It looks to be too big and unweildly to be of much use and I don't really consider such a behmoth to be a true pocket tool.

Well, the XXLT is more of a curio (it has a lighter for example) and, to my knowledge, is not available in the USA (if that is where you are). Either this is due to yet another silly DHS rule against "pyrotechnical" "weapons" or something similar, or it might be that Victorinox simple don't take their own product too seriously and realize that it simply is not very marketable. I don't know for sure, heck - it might be a combination of both reasons...

Either way - the XXLT makes no sense.

The XLT is, however, really a very different thing. First, it really is *not* a behemoth, the pics I posted might be misleading. It is amazingly compact and the size difference with the original SwissChamp, which I used for 9 years, is not that big. This being said - if by "pocket tool" you really mean *pocket* I would have to agree with you. This is why I carry it on the belt.

As for being unweildly, I find it extremely comfortable to use (but then, I have big hands).

One thing is certain: it is far more practical to carry the SwissChamp XLT than to carry both the original SwissChamp AND the Cybertool ;) and as for carrying only one - well, that would be missing on the best tools of the other one. Not an option either (at least for me)

Check it out in a store (if you have one close enough). You might like it!

Cheers

My favorite is the Cybertool 34. I keep it at my desk at work.

My most used by far is the Alox Electrician, the electricians blade on it is awesome.

how do you use it? I never quite understood the purpose of this blade?

It's intended design is for splitting and stripping wires. I use it a lot for that. If I'm doing electrical work around the house or on the cars, it's in my pocket.

It's also great for opening boxes and cans of copenhagen. The shape of the blade allows the tip it to bite well without raising your hand too much, same as a wharncliffe. It will slice well on almost any straight draw cut.

You can even use the stripping notch for pruning work.

A wharncliffe style blade is one of the more useful IMO and the electricians blade takes it to the next level by adding the notch (although it's not pointy like most wharny's)
