Looking for a production dual purpose folder for the beach, travel, ect. that'll cover most bases - light utility/fighter. The Benchmade 710 immediately comes to mind. Any other thoughts?

Axis AFCK in D-2 would be another one to think about. Mine has a permanant place in my LF pocket. God Bless Benchmade for finally putting the Axis and AFCK together and then further sweetening the pot by making the blade in D-2. Gotta love it!

Benchmade Stryker somes to mind. Comes in two sizes if blade length is a concern due to local law.

If budget allows a Sebenza I don't why that wouldn't fit the bill.

Benchmade 710 is my top choice, too. Carryable, strong, reliable, recurved blade, etc. Axis AFCK would be my top choice, but for me the handle is a bit too big to be truly easily carryable.

I'll also put my vote in for that AFCK...but if you're looking for something lighter and that also packs a lot of punch I'd look into Spyderco's Native.

An Emerson Commander would be my choice. In fact, I'm in the market for one now. You have the choice of the regualar or mini, depending on your preferences.

When I held it at the local shop, it seemed light, tough, very fast opening (even without the wave), and it actually felt very light in my pocket.

An awsome thing about this is that, if you go to the beach and get sand all over and inside the thing, you can take it apart and clean it, without voiding the warranty.

Let us know what you pick..

Good luck;)

my favs......

1) EKI SOCFK w/green G10 and black tanto blade, looks cool, fits my hand great, and its waved too!

2) BM 806SD2 AFCK (or really, any AFCK series, all excellent knives, ie 800S, etc) an excellent knife, and the older liner lock versions are available cheap at www.newgraham.com, like $70 or so.

3) EKI Spec-War w/SP blade, again, it fits my hand well.

some other good ones are

crawford kasper foldder and perfigo folder, both great but high $$

CRKT kasper, a lotta knife for the $$

cammilus cuda maxx a great knife, D2 steel, frame lock, and priced right too

DDR maxx series, excellent, but high $$

BM stryker series, great knives

spyderco police w/SE, love my SS handle police mod

EKI CQC7/BM 970-975 series - a classic imho, i love my 975 SBT, EKI should make one thats not a spec edition and $200+

good luck

I'm with mschwoeb!
I bought the B/S Small Spearpoint in BG-42 and absolutely love it!
Built like the proverbial brick s#$thouse, solid lock, very tough.
I just ain't gonna be doin any precision whittling with it though.

Within my price range it is the Benchmade Axis AFCK (806D2), but I also strongly considered the 710HS. After doing a bunch of reading here and handling a bunch of knives, those were my finalists for my purposes. I chose the 806D2 for the great handle and because I liked the thumb hole better than the thumb stud on the 710HS. I've carried the 806D2 every day since I got it (about a month now) and the size has not been a problem.

The AFCK Axis gets my vote. I think for "all around" carry it's pretty hard to beat. A VERY close second would be the BM 710, excellent knife ( I just like the thumb hole better than a stud) but that is a personal preference.

EK makes some great knives, their handles are very comfortable so I would look into those as well. Although, for general all around carry, I would stay away from tanto blades and chisel ground.

I would also look into some Spyderco products. Some people do not like the hole in the blade, mainly based on looks. However, they make a great product. Some that come to mind are: the Police model, Endura, (go for the metal handled version).

Someone mentioned the Buck Strider, great knife that is very stout and "over built". However, I find it to be a little "wide" in the handle for an EDC knife.

Just my 2 cents

Spyderco Endura!
Great opening method (the Spyderco Hole),
Alot of blade in a very light package (less than 3oz.),
And VG-10 steel.

What more could you want?

Good luck,
Allen.

The Benchmade 735 is becoming my favorite in this category. It is the ideal size for a dual-purpose folder. Big enough for full strength cutting, not big enough to cause panic. The relatively wide semi spear-point blade is excellent for all kinds of utility and provides a strong point. The Axis lock rules.

That's a tough one. My current favorite is a Strider AR, but it might a bit large for your tastes.

The 710 would be a good choice for utility/defense.

The smallest I would go with for utility AND defense would be a Spyderco Native - a super knife for the $$.
