Favourite Flashlight

Sounds like we all have dozens of lights for dozens of different purposes.

But does anyone just have a favourite light, for pratical or sentimental or any other reasons? Why do you like it?

My 4D Mag I have had for 8 years. It is the oldest one I have and has ridden with me everyday in 3 different vehicles. It is one of the old ones that had wider barrels. Thanks to Walt it now has a Carley lamp.

I have a UKE SL4 that I won in a snorkelling treasure hunt in Cozumel (shortly after I had given one just like it to one of the divemasters there).

Lastly, and not surprisingly for anyone who reads my posts here, my yellow UKE Q40. I just love it. It goes with me everywhere in my briefcase. Just plain damn handy.

So what are your favs...?

It's like asking a parent which child they love the most!

Streamlight Stinger by a fair margin. Powerful, compact, easy to use.

If I had a favorite it would be the Pelican Stealthlite.

I do have favored layouts. I like the 4AA layouts. The UKE 4AA, Stealthlite and PT Tec-40 are great. The AA bateries are cheap and easy to find. I had a Tekna 4AA and miss it. I wish I could find a like-new one again.

I like the 2 DL123A lights. I only have the SF 6P and UKE 2L. And I've handled the Scorpian. I like all 3.

Continuing with the 6V theme the PT Rage's are great. But I haven't figured out what to do with them yet. So my kids play with them.

Oh man, balckz28 - a Kel-lite! I have a 6 D cell with the large head, but the blasted switch broke. Sure wish I knew where to get a replacement switch. Any ideas??

ranchman,

My kel-lite has been to hell and back

and it refuses to die. This is a great backup light for me because it always works. I don't believe the company exists anymore, so I have no idea about replacement parts for it

Too bad, because they make a heavy-duty product.

WOW...just one favorite? That's definately an impossible choice. I guest if I look at the most used, it would have to be my PAL LED; a constant bed-side companion and always easy to find in the dark. Heck, my son left the light on for over a week and the thing is still going strong on the same 9V battery (can't do that with my Surefire or Scorpion!). The PAL has really been a "pal"...from changing the thermostat, checking the kids, the "midnight" fridge raids...on and on and on.

Sure, I've got brighter lights, "cooler" lights, and bigger lights, but the little PAL is a very reliable little companion and therefore wins my most "favorite flashlight" award

I have two StealthLites - they're tough, and have a good beam. I've expected a lot and they're never broken. They've been in the sea, and a few rivers and lakes...they've been dropped from crazy heights, and thrown around in the bottom of my bag...
In short; they aree tough.

BUT - My SureFire 12PM is a lightsabre! Nothing (not even full-beam headlamps) beat the 12PM for shear reach, and brightness...
The run-time and expense are what let's it down, and that's why if I HAD to choose ONE flashlight, I'd go for my Pelican SteathLite.

Having said that, I want a SureFire M2 and I hope this will replace the StealthLite.

We'll see!

I think of the Pelican Stealthlite as one of my favorite flashlights. 4AA and plenty bright, with a real switch (so you can turn it on one-handed!) which can be locked on or off. And don't forget that AA flashlights can be loaded with lithium AA batteries. Expensive, but great shelf life for those "emergency" lights, very light compared to alkaline, and they work at cold temperatures where alkalines do not.

I also think of my SureFire 6z as a favorite. All my P60 bulbs have much better (tight) beam patterns than any P90 or P91 bulb I've seen. And I got great deal on a couple of dozen fresh Duracell 123 batteries, so I'm using more than ever!

And then there are my old 5D cell Maglites, with either alkaline or Hi-Cap NiCads batteries and Carley lamps. Sort of like portable searchlights! I guess I like those too. :-)

Streamlight Scorpion. The right size, the right intensity, solid and reliable. I buy the batteries in bulk so it isn't even that expensive.

Favorite? I dunno. Probably my Streamlight Scorpion.

As for Kel-Lite parts: Kel-Lite was sold to Legend Brand flashlights which was sold to Brinkmann a few years back. Try that.

The Kel-Lites were supposed to be the original heavy duty torches, ancestors to Mags and other flashlights. They do indeed sound rugged.

Where do you get your DL123As?
How many for how much?!

The largest "bulk" order I've made is for forty... I'm thinking of getting some SureFire Hurricane 12B's which have 12 of the little devils.

cheapbatteries.com has 123A's for as little as $2.00 each when you buy 48, botach.com sells them for $2.50 each for an order of 30.

Clay, get yourself a Scorpion, you won't regret it.

I just bought 20 Sanyo 123A's from Electro.net http://store.yahoo.com/electronetdistributors/san123alitba.html for 1.89 each. I used to get them from cheapbatteries.com, but electronet starts at 1.89 for 1 battery. I checked them against Duracell and they start at the same voltage anyway. They seem to be holding up even when using my P61 lamp in my Surefire D2. I heard some batteries were shutting down due to heat build up, I ran it for about 5 min without any problem, it was warm but still putting out power. If it works with the P61, it should work in any of my other lights, all with a lower power draw.

My brother "blind" tested me with five different brands, and I picked Duracell and Energizer as the sets which where brighter and whiter for longer. As such I trend to avoid the cheaper brands which is a shame as I was hoping I couldn't tell the difference!

I wanted to buy a large number of ex English Army Duracells which are green and black. These were rotated out of storage after four or five years and then sold for £1 (~$1.5) each, but my contact fell through & I only had the two sets (8) as a trial rather than the 100 (25 sets) I wanted.
