That's pretty much what I've found- Duracell and Energizer make the best 123A's, with Duracell getting the edge. And the Duracell Ultra's actually give you 10-20% longer runtime at a sronger light level than standard 123's. Newest generations of SureFires ship with the Ultra's.

Anyone have a cheap place to buy Duracell Ultra 123A's? I believe it was Tim Flanagan who said that Ultra's work much better. Those Sanyo's sound good, but if anyone knows of a cheap place to get Ultra's, please share your treasure.

Thanks, Bucky

I agree that Duracell makes a better battery. Since I buy them for my work I decided to test the batteries against each other. I ran them in my Surefire D2 with a P61 lamp. I know this isn't real scientific, but I just wanted to see what would happen before we started ordering them for work. Also, not every battery off the line is the same, so these results could vary.

The Duracell Ultras ran for 28 min ($16.99 local store). The regular Duracell's ran for 25 min ($6.33 Botach). The Sanyo's ran for 23 min ($3.80 electronet). So the Duracell is a better battery but the Sanyo's are about 3/4 the price for the regular Duracell's and last way longer than 3/4 the time, so it is cheaper to run with the Sanyo's. I guess you have to choose if you want to pay more for a longer run time or get by cheaper and replace the batteries more often.

If anyone knows of a place to get the ultras cheap let us know, otherwise I guess I will go on using the Sanyo's.

Thanks for that most helpful of info Brock. I will be purchasing my M2 Centurion soon and I was wondering how accurate those quoted run times from SureFire were. Good to know. I think I am with you with the Sanyo's. Someone said that all new generation SureFire's come with ultra's, did your Defender? Also is the P61 that much brighter that it is a reasonable to use it consistently even at the expense of shorter run time?

Yes, my Surefire D2 came with Duracell Ultra's. I would say the P61 lamp throws a wider beam of light at the same intensity as the P60. Say the P60 lamp is 1 foot across at about 10 feet, the P61 would be about 2 feet across and the same brightness. So it isn't really brighter, but there is more light covering more area. Does that make since?

I switch between the lamps, at work I tend to leave the P60 in becasue I tend to run the light a lot, at home I use the P61 because I only use it for short bursts and really want something lit up.

Brock, thanks for all the great battery info.

I ordered a Scorpion from Tanner's Store Front, so I finally made the plunge (not like it is a big purchase, but there is always something else demanding my income). Look forward to playing with it.

My big light is a six cell Mag. My small hand held is a Pelican II. My minature is a saphire, or a microlight. I just got a Stylus III by Streamlight and am very impressed.

My favorite illuminator would have to be my Surefire M3, eventhough the one that I carry most often is my new Surefire E2D. The E2D is more comfortable as an E.D.C. light, but if I had the choice of only one, it would be the M3. Soldier of Fortune Cookie

Wow, this one was dredged up from the bowels. A lot of ligths have come along since this one started.

My favorite since last summer has been the Doug Speck Fire~Fly. Can't wait until the new ones are done! :)

my fav is my E2D surefire, before that i carried a E2e for yrs, as far as larger flashlites my streamlight 5 'C' cell batonlite has been w/me for over 10 yrs w/no probs.......

Can't pick just one.

For keychain carry, the winner is the Arc AAA.

For pocket carry, the Arc LSH-P.

And for everything else, the Surefire L4.

My PrincetonTec Blast, because I always have one on me. My SureFire E1e-HA is a close second, but the Blast takes normal batteries and the SureFire needs lithium. I love my SureFire, but the Blast is my favorite.

Too many great ones to really choose, but if I have to I will go with my most used:

PAL light (I have three of them all over the house and I rarely travel with out them. Plus they use a comon 9 volt battery)
Photon (always with me, attached to my leatherman micra in my mission wallet)
CMG Infinity Ultra (part of my edc, tough, easy to use with one hand and uses a common battery)

I still love my Surefires and Streamlights.

Well, in the four years since the start of this thread I have gone through a lot of different flashlights. But the latest is the greatest, the new Surefire L2 with a 3 watt LED and two stage switch is the best I have used. 15 or 65 lumens from a fail proof LED source, best combination of features for stage use yet.

This is my current favorite:
