Favourite Food Prep Blade?

I have a couple good kitchen knives in my camping stuff. Usually a couple Santuko's.

great looking blades folks...

in the house, on the trail or in the camp, i like to use my BHK Long Trail for most food prep and paring... it is a sweet little knife and it's wicked sharp...

:D :D :D

In all seriousness, the Scrap Yard Bird Dog LE is one of my favorite blades for food prep. The 154CM blade doesn't rust easily and holds an edge really well, the blade is thin and full flat grind for excellent slicing, and the rubberized mudder handles are really comfortable and don't absorb fluids.

I agree about the ML Knife, looks like a great knife. I really like the looks that JK Hudson Bay knife as well. I had one of those small Swiss Army style knives before, but found that even though it had so many different little tools and whatnot, it was not really good for anything. The blades I found to be too flimsy, the tools never really worked all that well, and it was too small to do anything other than sit in my fishing box. But that's just my opinion. I like a knife than can dish out the meat so to speak.

In the kitchen: Opinel 12 for weggies and mora 2000 for the rest...Sometimes a mora 510.

In the woods: Whichever knife I'm carrying (mostly mora 2000, 510/Hultafors hvk)

Oh...Also a mora cobblers knife that I modified a couple of years ago...Great little thing! :D

I'll try to explain but if I come off sounding defensive, please don't take it that way.

The Vic Farmer and the peanut are the knives I carry daily. The Farmer sees most use but I carry the peanut in honor of my grandfather who found that a small two blade Case swell-center whittler was good enough to carry for probably 30 years. After carrying the peanut for so long, I can see why he liked a small unobtrusive, sharp little knife.

Second, the OP said "when in the field, car camping, backpacking, day hiking, whatever". Didn't say anything about survival. When car camping I'd probably have a half dozen knives floating around camp. A fillet knife, a mora, a Bark River woodland, a large butcher/kitchen knife, etc. I was just being honest.

Now, if the SHTF today while I'm at work, the knives I'll have with me are the Farmer, Peanut and the Mora that rides in my day/work bag. ;) I'm not tossing one 'til ounces count.

Great combo, Love that Case.

You fellas are living large. Great pics. :)

Rachael Ray gusto grip, 6.95 at Bed, Bath and Beyond. Pretty much use it for everything, as a matter of fact. Chris

I've been finding myself using my Dozier Kabar folder for a lot of food prep out in the field. The hollow grind makes it thin enough at the end of the edge to slice well. Since I keep it in my pocket and use whatever fixed blade to do all the wood work (mora or Browning 679), it's generally clean. AUS 8 is fairly rust resistant so I don't have to worry about having to clean it really well and drying it out.

I even use it at home for quick or simple food prep, although for larger tasks i'll just pull out an 8" Chefs knife for speed.

i have been using my SAK Hiker most prominently here in the office. at home my wife frowns if i pull out the beckers for food prep..lol so i use a JK Henkels Santoku or one of these for small slicing and dicing...kinda like the mora of kitchen blades IMO.

Kuhn-Rikon paring knives...

My Dale Chudzinski 3/32" thick Nessmuk is probably my favorite for camp cooking and food prep.

However Spooky gave me a Mora 2000, and while I haven't had it out camping it's had pretty much continuous use in my kitchen at home:thumbup:
