Gentleman, I want to try ascertain which model is becoming the new best seller or favourite Khukuri (or any product for that matter) offered by HI.

My personal favourite is the GS but then I only have seen 6, I am getting a Tarwar soon so who knows what will happen to my choice but it would be interesting to see what everyone else likes !!

Regards and blessings
Brendan

also, the only HI khuk I have. Not one regret.

Those little 12 inchers are cute as heck though, aren't they?

Brendan,

There's a lot of varations in personal preferences as to size and style, but if I were looking for a middle ground, all around, khukri, my vote would go to the World War II model. To me it's the best compromise of all the qualities that make a khuk a khuk.

My favorite is the Sherpa Wool Underwear--fits like a glove and smells like the Himalayas:rolleyes: ;) :D

Seriously, I'd have to vote for either the 18"AK or 20"AK with old convex edge and wood handles. No better knives made IMHO.

Right on Uwinv!!!!!!
The old style 18" AK with the convex edge bevel rules!!!!:D

Well so far I have only seen two HI khukuris in person-- my BAS and my 18" AK, both made by Sher. I think the AK might be a bit cooler overall, but the BAS will always have a special place in my heart as my first khuk. As far as other models I have seen online, I think the YCS is probably my favorite. It's pretty hard to narrow it down to just one though.

1. 25" Kumar Kobra. Because it's the very best long knife ever made.

[space left blank for effect...}

2. A *long* way behind that, my 2lb 25" sirupati by Sher. Apart from the 25" KK, the very best long knife ever made. Amazing quality, stunning performance, just not as good as the long Kobra.

3. There is no 3, because my 20" sirupati and 20" salyan are both villagers rather than HI blades.

mmmm...

25inchers, we'll have to get together so you can show me those beauts Tom !!

Favourite is my 12" AK by Kesar. Was my first HI khuk, and is the one I use the most. For big projects I must admit I am far more used to using bolo. Tried to get used to khuks for clearing brush, choping trees, etc... But I find myself going back to what I was raised with. Now an HI bolo line, that would be something:D Especially as my work horse bolo gets along in years...

.... hmmm, should we bother to ask why you are running around sniffing a sherpa's underwear????? :) :p

I like the AK khukuries in 18 and 20 inch sizes. Especially the older ones.

For all-round use, and still easy carry, I guess it's a toss-up between my 18" Chitlangi and my 19" Village model. Great chopping power for the weight, and just enough belly to chop well. The Chitlangi pulls ahead for slicing and lighter work, not to mention the fullers create an amazing balance. Very attached to my first, a 15" AK though. The first one does seem special.

Someday, I've gotta get a bigger Chitlangi. And a bigger AK. And...

18" Sher horn handled AK to use,

YCS to look at.

Falcata has the best sheath of any tho. Silver and carved wood!

I still love my YCS best of all. I enjoy using it the most. I love the heft and balance of when chopping, (bites deep but does not wedge). I wish I had a plain jane version with the steel fittings AND the deep Sanu fullers on the one regular I have. It may even go out deer hunting with me this month if I do get to go, that is. My second would be my Falcata by Sanu. I have done no more with it than work the wood and metal finishs though. Since there will be no more I dare not use it hard. I am a wimp I know.

The YCS was/is designed to be the ultimate hunting tool system. You have the khuk for the heavy work and the two kardas and the awl for skinning and caping. The awl goes a long way in helping get the hide ready to make rawhide or to tan into leather by punching lacing holes around the perimeter.:)

If the YCS had the full convexed edge bevel like it was designed there would never have been any problems with it.:(
But then that's true of any of the later model khuks. I'm glad to see at least a partial return to the full convexed edge and hope that someday the kamis will return to what's been tried and true for centuries.

Yvsa:

In a way, I'm glad to hear that the edges on the current YCS weren't what you designed.

I had a plain YCS that was an amazing chopper. Nothing but sweet spot. I had reservations about the very thin edge on the blade, but I figured it was there for a reason. Then, I offered to take some long-dead trees out for my folks. The edge lasted two strokes on the hard little branches. I found myself wondering why you'd put such a thin edge on a design that seemed made for chopping.

Now I know.
