Depends on the knife. There are many categories

Overall, I have a black-stained curly maple handle random/Ladder pattern bpwie bladed damascus fighter from Jason Knight that I would use for everything. Paul Long made the sheath out of beaver tail leather. The whole package is exceptional.

It's the knife that most other makers who have seen and handled it want to buy.

For a folder, I have a Jess Horn stag handled 25th Anniversary Remington pattern featuring a "chute" pattern blade. It locks up like a bank vault and is very easy to open, without being "sloppy".

Tim Wright is a good friend, and has provided me with a number of knives.

Best Regards,

Who are your favourite custom knifemakers? Or, who made your favourite custom knife?

I'm surprised that nobody has answered the second question posted - which I find to be the more interesting of the two.

My actual favourite custom knife is one I had a hand in making - and the reasons it is my favourite have more to do with the friendships forged in the making rather than the knife itself.

Assuming that the spirit of the question rests with stating who made my favourite custom knife that I purchased, it would be this one below. Made by 4 makers who all certainly rank among my favourites: Jerry Fisk, Russ Andrews, Dan Farr and Burt Foster.

It was one of the first of the forum-based knife-related fund raising initiatives. You can read the whole story here (unfortunately the pics are mostly broken links now):

https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/announcement-the-bladeforums-charity-bowie.456832/

The knife - and the accompanying fund-raising effort - were the subject of a feature article in Blade Magazine - so an additional touch of provenance.

And the knife itself is, in my view, as clearly emblematic of the bowie genre as can be. You may have noticed, that's my favourite kind of knife. ;) And the fact that it is adorned with an epic hunk of stag doesn't hurt one bit.

And the icing on the cake? The blade comes with a backup! Jerry forged TWO blades for the project just in case some misfortune should befall one blade on its way to completion.

Love to see the fave blade of my fellow forumites. Yeah, I know it's hard to pick one, but that's what makes it fun.

Naming all my faves would be difficult and lengthy. My current short list would be Shane Sibert, Zac Buchanan, Ben Tendick, and Todd Begg. No particular order in the listing but I am always impressed with these guys and I own work by each maker.

This is my favorite pocket knife and it’s also made by my favorite custom folder maker. (Jury is out on custom fixed blades). Bret Dowell is a great guy, does great work and is extremely consistent at it. I have a small collection of his knives but this Sowbelly Trapper is by far my favorite.

I asked that he streamlined the clip blade from the normal Bose pattern on which this knife is based, and also asked if he would leave the pins with their hammered finish. He had no qualms about it and made a fantastic knife that I carry and use regularly.

3-7/8” closed, ATS-34 steel, jigged black micarta scales.

Joe Kious, but I am admittedly biased as he was instrumental in making my wife as well as my favorite knife. Having Joe as a father in law was a real blessing. I learned a lot about knives and have met a number of great people through his introductions. I'm also partial to Warren Osborne's work. One of these days, I'll track down one of Jerry Halfrich's knives. I've enjoyed looking at other people's favorites mentioned above, there are a ton of really amazing makers out there.

Some of my favorite makers would be

W.F. "Bill" Moran
A.G. "Barney" Barnes
E. Jay Hendrickson
Burt Foster
Nick Wheeler
Jason Knight

My Favorite Custom was made by Barney Barnes

Bill Moran because choosing others is too hard. Too many REALLY good guys out there. :D The late great John White would be on my short to medium length list along with guys like DHIII, Bruce Bump, Jason Knight, Nick Wheeler, Adam Desrosiers and Russ Andrews because I got so much good advice from them among others. My favorite custom that I used to own was the ABS Expo knife that Bill Moran made.

Stan Wilson
Jim Smyth
Joe Kious
Robert Hajovsky
Mauricio Dobruski

In no particular order
