Feather stick curls????

That picture I posted was just an example of what Spooky was talking about. When you make some fuzzy things just use a forward grip. No thumb on the spine.

Try to make small fine curls instead of long thin ones that might break off. Here is a picture focused on the the small light curls. Lights great.

Make a pile and fluff it up like a pile of pine neddles.

You can make small little fuzz trees too.

Its odd reading this thread, because I have never used a knife to help prepare a fire before. Blasphemy, I know.:p
I always used matches (I have yet to get a firesteel) and either twine or the occasional bit of natural tinder. I found fuzz sticks kill the edge on most of my knives, especially as they are mostly poor quality folders. I suppose you could say I adapted my skills to meet my equipment halfway, which is what this is all about, ain't it?:D

Interesting.... I probably made 15 feather sticks per knife and the two RAT knives will still shave hair. The Clipper had already been dulled a bit around the house but it will still slice paper nicely

bearthedog-thats what I am shooting for. I saw your pics and went down in my basement and tried some more real quick. Much better than before I think.. I tried out my Kellam Pukko I got in the mail with the RCs too. The Kellam was done with thumb on spine, the other two were done like your pic.

Thanks everyone for the ideas and help.

I notice that you said poor quality FOLDERS.....plural. Buy one good knife and be happy like the rest of us........or buy LOTS of good ones and be OCD like some of us:D

Well, there's a few reasons for that business...among them, I'm almost 19, and in college. I have zero funds.:p I am LUSTING for the RC-4 though. And an S1. And...:D The only decent knives I own are a USMC Kabar and a Kershaw Groove. Thank God for BFC, or else I might never have got rid of the Mall Ninja deep within me.

Nice try!

Opinel #7- ~$6
Mora #1/510/Triflex- ~$10
Victorinox Soldier/Farmer/Trekker- ~$15-30
Mora 2000- ~$30

Lots of decent steel can be had for the cost of lunch for a day or two! It's the new(?) Ramen motivation.

Gentlemen, I appreciate your suggestions. However, I have an empty bank account and $24 in my wallet; the rest is and will be spoken for.:grumpy: At least for a while...but lets not derail the thread further, eh?
