Feathersticks, shavings...it's all good. Post 'em if you got 'em

Ha!,

Not too many people say that. I'm honored. I'm still in the hunt for a nice old S-1 Bowie, or a Hattori.

The old Sogs can be very capable field knives.

Maybe we should start a spear thread,

You know me and my philosophy, as long as you carry as good as quality as you can reasonably afford out there into the wilds, the style of knife doesn't matter, what matters is are you proficient with it. The way things are looking, I haven't just been practicing skills with bushcraft knives lately :)

I saw a couple at Blade, they are running about $500 for the used S1s now, and I'm just not gonna do it lol. Maybe we should start a spear and gig thread, could be interesting.

I didn't have a lot of time to spare at work today, but I managed a couple with the Martin MR-5, not bad for first feathersticks with it done quickly...in seasoned hickory. I could have managed a fire I'm pretty sure. Lol, it was like 86F and we haven't had sh_t for rain all summer...

I wish Sogs had a tip like Ed's.

At $380 from Ed for his awesome CPM S35VN, versus the $500 for a used SOG in SK-5...I didn't even have to think about it :) If he delays his retirement long enough...he's delaying it to raise money to help Newt, I may just order another with a 4.5 inch blade :D

Yeah the S1s are hitting the Stratosphere. Probably never see one here either. That MR-5 certainly raises that bar. Especially on the sheath side.

Not to mention, I love brass on knives. I actually just told Ed that this morning in an email.

I have to go do some feathers with the Bush Hunter and get them posted up.

I've had 3 of the 5th Grp S1s, and carried them for years. So I developed a relationship with that model, and if I run across a decent deal or decent trade I will pick up another one. I have a fondness for them, and I have a weakness for stacked leather handles. That said, I'd much rather just get Ed to make me one out of S35VN. He has made them before. One of his mentors was Gary Hicks, who is a friend of Ben Baker, and Mr. Baker gave Gary permission to make them to his original specs. I had of of Gary's in ATS-34 with brass and micarta> Very nicely done, but I really prefer the stacked leather so I sold that one a while back. Matt Martin of Vehement Knives makes a wicked full tang version of the SOG Bowie.

I am a fan of stcked leather myself. Especially if you cap it off with brass. I am not much of a super steel aficionado. But I'm coming around. S35VN and 80CRV2, both seem to be working for me at the moment. With the prior having much better stain resistance.

The corrosion resistance after tests in Florida was what sealed the deal for me and made the CPM S35VN my favorite steel. I already liked the edge taking and retention, and toughness when heat treated and quenched properly. Now all I have to do is wait it out till they come up with more new super steels and my favorite one will maybe drop in price a little :)

Playing around with a Matt Graham PBK, that was loaned to me to try,

Reasonable for a first effort,

Shaving with the spine,

Fast and hot,

Boltin' through the woods,

A work in progress,

I may have to cut down my sick spruce, about 75' high . What tools are needed to make such a large feather stick and who could do it for me??

Build a giant bench plane out of a Town Snowplow cutting edge.

Too bad about the tree.

Standing dead spruce is a major source of firewood in Minnesota, and points north. The Conovers speak very highly of it in their books.
