Feeler for a CA gathering

There is no water at the site. There is a very small creek that runs alongside the road near Hartland a few miles down the road. It would probably be a good idea to bring water.

I went hunting in the East Mojave for four days and you guys let this slide to page 7?:D

I'm sending it back up in case some infrequent visitors check out the first page.;)

There will be some hiking, archery, slingshots and slings, knife and hawk throwing, trap building, shelter building, all manner of chopping/sawing, other wilderness skills, shooting (a ways out from camp in a safe location), trading of gear, show and tell, comraderie, and there's a remote chance that a few alcoholic beverages will be consumed around the campfire accompanied by a little BSing. For starters, anyway.

Edit: I'm also bringing a mountain bike.

How many of you are bringing your significan others, or how many women are coming? Just wondering if my wife would feel like the odd one out if she came.

If my girlfriend can get away from school stuff she will be there. (thesis writing and the last of her classes before graduation at the end of may) But if I had to guess I'd say she is not going to make it.

Sweet, me too. I put in for the days off today, I won't know for sure until the 18th if I will get the days off, but I don't think it will be a problem. I'm planning on leaving Friday morning, probably be there around noon.

DWK2 what did you go hunting and how did the hunt go. I might go there on thursday too if i can get away if not, Then im leaving on friday morning. I checked for Geocaching in the area and there are none close by. I forgot who mentioned that they do Geocaching. I can print a topo map for the area we would be in if anyone wants to find hiking trails. I cant wait to meet everyone. I got a 15gallon blue barrel that i can fill up and bring over for basic camp chores. Then an extra 5-10 gallons of filtered drinking water.

Sasha,

I took an 84 yr old geezer friend (whom I might bring to BushBash I if you guys aren't really nice to me) out to the East Mojave in pursuit of those wiley wabbits. He wanted to snipe some with a long-range 6 mm setup while I favored a foot-borne effort with an 11-87 and some 7 1/2 shot. I brought him back a nice young one and after cleaning it he decided he didn't need any more. So a lot more armed hiking than hunting!

When does the season ends for bugs bunny??? Im still looking at .22s and realy dont want to miss the season. As for the bush bash bring him over.. If we dont like you we would go hiking and let you keep him company.

Sasha

You can't totally miss it----jackrabbits are open all year in all the areas with which I'm familiar. You can go to the Dept. of Fish & Game website to get the season(s) for cottontails and other non-jackrabbits.

Many hunters prefer the milder flavor of cottontails but my old hunting buddy thinks jacks have a better taste. Of course, even he wouldn't want a really old one. Then again, being that they are sort of a universal food source for predators, I don't think there are that many really old jacks hopping around.

The other advantage of jacks is size. The young one I shot was a solid five pounds. I saw three cottontails that looked like little more than a pound each (although they can get larger). What amazed me most was some European hares that I saw in the Czech Republic. They looked to be a good 20 lbs and a local claimed he had taken a couple in the 10-15 kg range. Now that's a monster bunny! You'd only need one for a huge batch of rabbit stew.

Thanks DWK2, If you wont mind i would bring some maps for you show me good spots for hunting .. Yes in they can get realy big Europe did see in the 10kg and they also have more fat on them.

Sasha

Yes, let's do some map review.

Of course the best thing would be to have access to some private land where the owner had a problem with overpopulation of rabbits. Unfortunately, I don't have that. However, when you are in an area that has bunnies on public land, you could always stop and ask for permission to hunt the adjacent private land.

Does the basic hunting lic is all you need for rabbits. Or do you need to apply for another permit like deer hunting?? If you dont mind me asking what distance do you mostly shoot rabbits??? Did you get only one rabbit for that long of a drive??
