First of all I would like to say hello to all. I have been an onlooker to this forum for som time now but only recently decided to join up.

I have been looking for a good higher end blade to take with me on my upcoming backpacking trip.

Of course I like Busse and Swamp Rat for choices but why is there not more reviews and info about Fehrman knives out there? Seem like very high quality blades for the price and they are available.

Thanks,

Cutler

I have 4 Fehrman knives and they are outstanding blades and great steel CPM3V. I also have and have had several Busse knives but my recommendation woud be for you to pick the Fehrman that catches you eye and order it. They are shipping quite fast now (about 2 weeks I think). The Fehrman knives are knives you can stake your life on if its a knife that you need to get out of trouble. Very tough steel and extremly nice people to deal with too.

The biggest problem with Fehrman is that once you have one the 1 will want to grow into more! Believe me, their knives are real "tank busters".

Do something good for yourself and order a Fehrman!

I have done some searching around and this is the only place that i am able to find any kind of reviedw on them at all, I wonder why this is?

I think I might give the Last Chance the go but wish there was more info out there.

I would love to see a side by side review of:

Busse
Fehrman
Trident
Swamp Rat
Scrap Yard

Any takers? (Cliff, Noss4, anyone at all?):)

I would be happy to just see busse or swamp rat vs. fehrman
like say peace maker vs. hr & last chance vs. M6, badger attack or simular knives.

Sorry, I could not get the Swamp Rat or the Scrap Yard, but here is a comparison between the Fehrman First Strike, Busse Hell Razor, Trident Oberland 03, and an Extrema Ratio. Of the four, the Hell Razor feels the lightest and the Fehrman feels the stoutest:

I would have no problem depending on the Fehrman to do what a large knife is supposed to be able to do.

Wow, I'm glad to have stumbled upon this thread. I didn't know anyone was making a production knife with CPM 3V. I know Jerry Hossom uses it if you pay an upgrade cost, but his are customs.

CPM 3V to my knowledge, is about the most shock resistant steel you can get except for S7. S7 is completely over the moon shock resistance wise. Unfortunately, S7 can't hold an edge. CPM 3V can hold an incredible edge right up there or beyond the other tool steels like D2.

I have a feeling I will be buying a Fehrman soon.

I have a bowie made of S7 (and more on the way) and it can hold an edge quite well. S5 appears to have more shock-resistance than S7, so that's worth checking out as well.

Thom, take a look at Crucible's Tool Steel Comparagraph at:
http://www.crucibleservice.com/datash/ds3Vv5b.pdf?CFID=1089028&CFTOKEN=91847771
It shows S7 at the bottom of the list for wear resistance which is about the closest thing we have to edge retention specs.

We use tool steels at my work and I have a tool steel reference handbook there. I will cite it more specifically when I go there tomorrow. But if memory serves, S7 is literally off the chart of shock resistance. Way higher than all of the other S steels.

Best regards,
Allan

I like the Fherman's and plan on getting one some day...

A Jerry Hossom custom would rock!!!

Busse?? Who makes those? ;)

Here's a picture of my Peacemaker, along with a Busse Active Duty and Dozier Arkansas Traveller, for a size comparison. Great knife, one of my favorite small fixed blades. Very stout, very sharp, very good edge retention. I think it has the best ergonomics for a knife of this size of any that I've ever used.

PS - No safe queens in my collection! :D

Just picked up a Fehrman Last Chance... Big knife for it's size. Feels powerful and fits great. As stated above, it should serve as a stout tool and SD weapon if called upon. SHARP!!

No Busses yet, but a couple on the way. :) I have held a few Busses and the are great feeling. My Swamp Rat M6 and Ratweiler are fantastic knives and great work horses, but the Fehrman seems heftier. "Tank Buster" is a great description! Also picked up Fehrman's Thru Hiker. Very nice neck knife. I will definitely be buying more Fehrmans... And Swamp Rats... And Busses... :D

Each bring something different to the table, but all are beasts...

Don't ask the people selling you a product to evalute it. That statement isn't even close to true, S7 is in fact brittle compared to some steels.

It shows S7 at the bottom of the list for wear resistance which is about the closest thing we have to edge retention specs.

That is completely false.

Cliff, please explain. I am not arguing with you nor disagreeing but to quote someone say it is false and then just leave it at that w/o giving why kinda leaves us on the edge.

I think allankid may have gotten his specs from crucible's website for wear resistance, Which shows S7 being at the bottom of the list of Tool Steels etc such as A2, A9, 3V, M2 etc. On the same page it also shows S7 being at the top of the list(with other said tool steels) for Impact resistance.

After reading the site I can understand where allankidd may have gotten his information.

Allan,

Thanks for the link. Wear resistance is one indicator among dozens of edge-retention for certain styles of cutting on certain materials. For cutting foliage and trees; before and after digging in the dirt and rocks with the same knife; I can tell you first hand that S7 takes and holds an edge.

Were it to be used as an industrial paper knife or a die-mold for abrasive products, I'd concede there are better choices and you named some. As it stands, when chopping berber carpet stapled to pine-par-soaked hardwood (aka used scratching post) or chopping the roots of staghorn sumac trees out of the ground, S7 takes and holds an edge. Were it to be used as a skinning knife, I'd be with you in saying there are bushels full of better choices, but I disagree with blanket statements when they're frayed and missing large patches.
