Fehrman Knife Guys

Well said Gravelface. I believe i have to agree about the Ferhmans.

Battle Mistresses can be difficult to find at times. Other times you might see a couple in a week or two's time. They are well worth the effort though.

I actually had the Fehrman Cold Fury as a top bookmark for weeks. I kept going back to look at it. I still think about it sometimes.

I keep doing this with the Peacemaker as well!

I've read some good reviews on the Fehrman knives, but wanted to ask some owners here their opinions,likes/dislikes.
Do they rank up with Busse?
Thanks!

My review of Busse, Fehrman and Strider fixed blades.
Hope this helps.

BTW, after several years use, I find that Fehrmans 3V holds an edge much better than Busses INFI, thus, it is my preference. Otherwise, they are both tough steels.

Since this review was originally posted, I have bought several other Fehrmans including a final Judgment. They all have proven to be excellent designs.

Busse

-Much more variety
-Better value holding
-Better corrosion resistance

Fehrman

-Better edge retention
-Much better fit and finish
-Came much sharper
-Have sheath

I use both and I am of the same opinion that shqxk . :)

I should also mention that I sent an email to the people at Fehrman asking for extra pictures of the Cold Fury. I wanted to see the black coat finish (prefer the satin but it costs more) and the sheath. They sent me the pictures I asked for, and you could tell that they took them especially for me because they had a printout of my email in the photo. I really appreciated it. I'm kinda stuck between Fehrman, Jericoh, and American Kami for my next fixed blade.

btwy, nice collection Christobal. I'm jealous. If my wife would figure out how to pay her taxes maybe her failure to prepay would stop eating up my returns and then I could have that collection too! Some day...

Infi is an "all around" steel, yes ....other steels are tougher, harder, hold an edge longer, resistant to corrosion, but Infi is the best combination of all the attributes without specializing in one. It is amazing stuff! The ability to reach its rc hardness and still be "malleable" without chipping is incredible. Infi shines in bigger knives, I much prefer SR101 in anything sub 7" (slicers and cutters) but don't get me wrong, SR 101 is great in larger knives.

Check out some of Swamprats and Scrapyards. Scrapyard is the best bang for your buck and since they started using SR101 also......it is really difficult to beat what they offer

Bearcut--good read, impressive!
Well said Gravel!
I'm definitely gettin a Fehrman, gotta test drive that CPM3V for myself.
Thanks fellers!!

It is a good way to describe Infi. It isn't some majic super steel but it sure is darn good at most things it does. It really has no great weaknesses except for the one source, fairly high price but at least that assures consistent quality from knife to knife, batch to batch. You know what you're getting with them.

I do like other steels too, but have a good amount of respect for Infi.

Yeah, Eric is a great guy. I've had 20-30 minute phone calls with him, and he is in no hurry to get off the phone. So I'm sure they did take those pics just for you.

I have also spoken with Jerry and he is a nice guy too.

If you buy the knife that YOU feel is right, then you will be happy, because either company and any model are all at the top of the litter.

You will probably end up with a few anyway as time and money allows.
Just my .5 cents. I am saving the other 1.5 for future posts.

I should also mention, that not only are both steels easy to keep sharp, once you get the bevels the way you like them, they both respond very well to a ceramic rod. They will keep sharp a very long time with touch ups.

Great knives. You won't go wrong with either, but will probably end up owning both at some point once the knife bug bites ya. ;)

I own several fehrmans and several busses. I can echo the sentiments of most of the above posts for the most part. But one difference I've noted that no one else has mentioned is that 3V tends to take a keener edge than infi. Infi however, seems to hold the edge longer. One of the attributes of infi is that is seems to reach a certain level of sharpness and get no duller from that point... always seeming to hold a useable cutting edge. Jerry Busse cut over 2700 cuts on 1" manilla rope live at Blade some years ago... he ran out of rope before the knife lost it's ability to cut it.

3V is very difficult to dull, though. I did a little review on the Last Chance a while back here on BF. Chopping, batoning, etc... didn't dull it much at all. Digging weeds out of the yard finally brought the edge to a point where it would not shave arm hair. A bit of stropping and it was hair popping once again. The performance convinced me to buy more fehrman knives.

My bi-partisan solution is to simply buy both! It works for me.... :D

I've owned both Busse and Fehrman and sold all my Busses.....not because they are bad/poor knives in any way, just my preference runs to Fehrman. I prefer 3V, Fehrman handles and the edge retention of Fehrman.....Busses are really awesome knives and as stated previous they have better resale value. However, I've never looked back after selling any Busse knives but just reacquired a Fehrman Last Chance/Armorall leather combo that I sold because I missed it too much!! Just to throw another wrench into the works, you might consider custom knives from various makers here on the forums....OTK and Joe Hoover are just a couple of possibilities. Joe's knives are beefy, quality knives for a veryyyyyy reasonable price and David at OTK makes blades in some of the best, quality steel and does so in a timely fashion with very reasonable prices.....and both will come with custom leather. Good luck in your search.......that is some of the most fun you'll have!!
