Fehrman OR Chris Reeve???? SURVIVAL

I would love to see a review of the Peacemaker! I know the stock is 3/16"...I was wanting to know how thin the edge was? How does the 3v sharpen? Thanks!

Fehrman blades are simply put the BEST all-around series of survival blades I have ever had the pleasure of using, bar none. And I have used/evaluated many of the highest quality knives on the market in real world conditions. Eric's attention to the details are what make them so superb. He really did his homework before producing these, and they can take any punishment I've been able to think of in my use, and the abuse doesn't even show.

You will not be disappointed. The 7.5" First Strike does everything most 9" blades can do yet is balanced nicely for fine work. The tips are reinforced so you have a needle point with great supoort becuase of the design geometry. It drop point can pierce a hide easily for skinning yet you can pry hard laterally with just the tip with no worries. The flat grind geometry with a nice thinner edge make it great for slicing meat and cheese, yet is strong enough to withstand any amount of chopping without rolling, denting, or chipping -- even through bone, which take a toll on blades. In other words, this blade can pry, but still CUTS the way a great knife always should.

The heat treat and steel choice, put together with the geometry and design elements, make these knives the closest to being the perfect blades I have EVER used in the wilderness. You can even dig without worries -- I dug holes and got under rocks, prying them up by standing on the handle, to pop the rocks out that were in the way. The design of the blade edge is sort of like a tanto but with belly instead of a secondary point -- the secondary edge is very useful for smaller tasks, prying, and digging without worry of damaging the primary long edge.

The handles are versatile so you can choke up onto the blade to whittle and move all the way back for more power in a chopping stroke. They are designed so that the knife stays comfortable to use even when you get tired -- the safety factor of using a knife when you are exhausted in the woods is a big one. Rounded handles will slip and roll as your hand gets tired trying to hold the knife in place for hard work. The Fehrman handles, because of their design, almost hold the knife FOR you when you work. These blades will meet you halfway all the time whenever you need them for outdoors work. They will never work against you no matter what the conditions.

The 5.5" Last Chance is surprisingly versatile as well -- it can chop like most 7" blades because of all the deisgn elements incorporated into it. I used it to pry open doors and windows on tactical entries during hard training exercises. It ripped things open without a hitch -- a superb entry tool.

My Fehrmans have become my first choice in a wilderness big blade, and they are the knives I'd grab first if I had to bug out in an emergency.

Awesome, awesome, awesome. get one and don't look back.

Best,

~Brian.

Hey Ryan! How's things?

One thing I love about the Fehrman is psychological: I know these blades are so tough that I don't have to look at the job, then ask myself, "Is this blade gonna be able to withstand that?" There's no hesitation. In fact, I just split a piece of wood with the Fehrman yesterday using a real hammer as a baton on the spine.

No problemo. Job done. Knife unscathed. Well, there WERE marks on the steel -- but on the HAMMER not the knife! Didn't even think twice about slamming a real hammer onto the spine. When I have that level of confidence in a blade that I don't even hesitate to pound the crap out of it for any task that comes up, I know I've found the one.

Hey Buddy, all is fine over here.

How are you doing?? Hope all is well my friend.

I agree, the Fehrman blades are blades that you can beat the crap out of and they still come back for more,Plus they have a nice sharp edge that isnt thick to the point where it makes it a poor slicer, they might be 1/4 but they slice like 3/16.I love the points on the Fehrmans, they poke threw hides with ease yet are built like tanks.

Nothing like using it for a shooting platform  I still think we are lucky we still have our privates after doing that LOL.

Sorry for question not exactly in topic but how is compared Fehrman's CPM-3V to INFI? Did you ever do such a test Brian?

glorfindel,

No I have not had that opportunity to test them side by side. I'd love to be able to do so -- Jerry makes amazing knives for sure. I still drool over his knives and will get one again in the future. I had one of his blades in the past, and traded it (I still kick myself for that one), but didn't have the opportunity to put it thru its paces at the time, so I lost the opportunity to compare. Jerry's knives can be, and have been, trusted by many whose opinions I value and respect, so they really do seem to be nuclear tough. No doubt they can take any punishment that they'd go through in the real world. Plus Jerry is a good guy -- anyone who likes Guinness and 12-year-old Scotch is okay in my book! :)

I wish I could play with every quality knife on the market -- but I don't make enough money to get all the blades I want. When I make a statement like the ones above, it should be qualified as "the best I've used yet." I will always suffer from Knife madness -- the need to aquire every knife I want and try it out to see if it is better than the last favorite I had. (grin).

That said, I am totally satisfied with the performance of the Fehrmans beyond anything else I've used. I definitely stand behind my reviews and statements here -- I try not to compare blades too much, just evaluate each on its own merits. The Fehrmans are unhesitatingly my first call out of the knives in my collection.

Best,

~Brian.

Thanks for the info on the pics, buttonpusher!

The last comment in this thread stated that we still hadn't heard about a release date for the new models (comment from 5/04). Any news from the front lines?

Also, I'd tried to fire off an email to Eric through his website, but haven't heard anything back (maybe it's lost in the ether). Does anyone know about the coating/lack of coating on the satin finished models? Is is the same as the black crinkle only a different color, or do you need to care for the entire blade as a naked tool steel (kinda like edge care for the black crinkle)?

Thanks,

Neil

for me these knives are much about comparable but I personally didn't tested independently each one yet..and yes knife-hobby can be expensive heehe, thanks Brian.

Neil,

I haven't received any from you... give me a call and we can discuss your needs. Our shop # is 740-685-2637.

Regarding your question on "Satin" finishes... it IS a naked steel finish so a little extra care is required. Put a little oil on it regularly and your good to go!

I just ordered a Peacemaker. I will review it once it arrives and I have had a chance to use it a bit.

Hi Eric,

When will the new model Extreme Judgement ( FK5a ) be available? What's it's specification.

Thanks,
kee

:D
Thanks for the reply, Eric! I went ahead and tried the e-mail route again; if I don't hear back, I'll try the shop number. Don't worry...I'll pester you until I can purchase a knife :) !

Does the presence of the EJ on the website mean their shipping? (note post just prior to this one)?

Thanks!

Just to let you guys know, we just got our 3v stock in and more Ex. Judgement blades is one of Eric's first priorities! There is however one of the first three originals left - is has a black finish.

If mine is any measure to go by, you will NOT be disappointed! Great knives! I've only cut wood, cardboard, and rope so far, but hope to use it on Elk in a little while....

RAS,
The "Neck Knife" is in stock - you'll have to get ahold of Eric for sheath options and $.

For everyone else out there I just noticed myself that Eric has made some of the updates on the web site www.fehrmanknives.com you'll be able to see the Shadow Scout (although it now has a "false edge"), the Extreme Judgement, as well as some new pics - with more to come!
