I made Warner's etcher deal and it works pretty good. I havent played with it enough to get that deep etch that fitzo is talking about. I always burn up the stencil before it gets good. :(

I have the Marking Methods etcher. It etches very deep and exactly where I want it. They are expensive though. If I was only forging knives I would buy the stamp but since I also do stainless knives the etch method makes them look precise.

I wore out my first stamp and ruined some nice blades with a screwy looking stamping. The marking method works best if the blade is finished before marking it. I have a problem hitting a blade with a stamp and getting it crooked or cocked over to one side. The blade should be hot before smaking it and usually I have the blade already finished.

I wonder if my MS knives would have passed the judging if the makers marks were all cockeyed?

what do you mean by that Dan?

Jacob, it's nothing to do with you it's just the way the thread went, I got to read it ..
, just a reminder to myself sort of, from past experience, sometimes believing that..
I'm walking on thin ice all the time and knowing it's pit falls if I should slip with words taking the wrong way, is prudent most the time..

Jacob, the manual for my etcher has nothing in it regarding the specs on the device. I'm sorry, there's nothing there; no specs, schematic, nothing. :(

you fail then. bwahahahahaha. anyways......thanks for the help man. im sure i will find the right voltage or amperage from running tests and whatnot.

Just because there's a lot of half-assed looking etches, don't blame the technique. Blame the technician or inadequate tools. I see plenty of stamped names where a couple letters are half ground off. Does that mean that stamping sucks, too?

Yikes! I did not mean to offend anyone who etches. It's honestly just a matter of what I think looks cool, on the examples I've seen. Purely a subjective opinion; I simply prefer the asthetics of a stamped logo. My apologies for coming off too strong.

Perhaps I'm biased because I have enough skills to learn already, without adding etching to the list :)

The key word is most. What happens in your statements that fall out of the most category??? And what does it do to other people's feelings when it isn't purdent?????

There can be large differences in aesthetics, I agree, so it becomes totally a matter of personal preference. Even when they look identical, it is ones right to prefer one over the other.

I think, though, that there are often "fine-lined font" etched logos that are mistaken for stamps. The etching process allows for a great deal of variation in appearance depending on stencil design and etching technique.

Take care. Are you going to the Janesville show? I'll probably be there Saturday hanging out at Mike Kanter's table if he'll let me.

Here is the company that I get my stencils made. It is on 5 miles from my house.

Those are good stencils. When I did that study a few years back of the various stencil manufacturers, their's compared very favorably with Marking Methods and IMG. As with IMG, they seemed more "transparent" to the current, so one had to be careful not to generate too much heat. Cut a beautiful crisp mark quite deep. Good prices, and a nice shade of burgundy for the fabric, too. LOL :)

show me what your stencil looks like. also where are these pics of your new PCA? everyone is waiting for them.

I going to try to have the owner (Jurgeon sp??) over again at the spring HI to do a demo. He drags his hand piece across the stencil. He had one of his hi-test machines here.

The stencil has the same drawing
of the profile of me with Indian George's Knives, New Bedford, MA. Along side of it.

The name and location all fit under the nose in the caricature, don't they, IIRC?? ;)

with a nose like that you could provide shade for the whole state of Massachusetts. dont you need a permit to have a nose that big?

I didn't even know there was show in Janesville this weekend. So, no I hadn't made plans to go. Interesting you mention it, though, I graduated high school (yes, on the first try!) from Janesville Parker. Go Vikings!

(P.S. Someone at Parker has a weird sense of humor... the mascot is a Viking but the colors are green and gold!)

NO! NO! I'm sorry, I didn't mean this weekend. DOn't go to Janesville for a show this weekend! PLEASE! :)

I meant the Badger Show. It's March 23, 24, 25 this year at the Holday Inn Express at HWY 14/I90.
