I have a friend who is also a Law Enforcement officer whom I go to school with who is looking for a new knife. Here are his requirements. Any suggestions are welcome.
Here are his exact words on what he is looking for.
6-8 inch blade
single bladed/edged, the back edge should be totally straight from the tip to the bottom of the handle serrated at the base and a black blade with finger guards on both sides and finger grooves on the handle black handle too and a hard sheath for it.

His price range is only $100 so customs might be out of the question.

Thanks,
He and I both appreciate your responses.

6-8" blade. That will be a fixed-blade sheath knife, you know.

cold steel SRK possibly? its the closest thing i can think of. or ka-bar next gen USMC knife

Is he going to be using this on duty? I wasn't aware that on duty officers could carry a 6-8" fixed blade.

What does he want to use the knife for?

That could drastically affect the knife he should be getting.

Just off the top of my head though I'd recommend checking out some of the Ranger knives. The RD-6 or RD-7 are both very tough knives. They are both offered in a "Bush" version that is 3/16th inch thick as opposed to the 1/4" version they normally come in. They should fit the price point too.

He's a police officer not a special forces operator, I can't even begin to think of a reason such a large knife needs to be carried. SWAT/SAR maybe, but on the streets? too many rambo movies? I mean no offense but can he at least be practical?

I'm curious, is he using this for duty carry?

I am a little slow on the uptake, but after several years on the is forum, i am understanding the rules of engagement. NO special forces Vietnam veteran would ever carry a big knife. If you are a "Bushcrafter" you can carry a big knife. Civilians and campers and hikers can carry a knife bigger than Rambo's,IF you call it a "chopper", "batoner", or "shtf" knife. No Soldiers, cops or other emergency personel should carry a big knife, because they will never contend with "shtf". If those dorks even talk about carrying anything bigger than a Victorinox "Classic", then we all get to laugh and poke fun at them. Then if they are a tough "MOFO", they will still stay here and get a membership. I think i will start writing this down so i don't get the "stink-eye" if i ever ask a question. Sincerely Henry

Maybe he's just a guy who wants a big knife. Maybe he has every other size of knife and now he wants a 6-8" chooper...uh, I mean chopper. Then, when he goes to work, he puts his BM710 in his waistband. On the weekends, he likes to chop some stuff up. Hence - big knife.

Maybe a Ranger....or a ScrapYard....or a Kabar or Becker......Durn!

Uhhh. . .I don't know who the last two posters were reffering to but just to clear things up, I'm not making any judgement calls here.

Matter of fact I actually carry a variety of large fixed blades (one of my favorites being a CS SRK) on duty at times. I like the SRK because it wasn't expensive and if I have to tear a car apart - as I have on occasion - I'm not too worried about messing up the blade.

So again, I am curious whether he will be carrying it on duty because the type of duty does make a difference and can greatly aid us in making recomendations. . .

By the way, there are a lot of times large blades come in handy for cops and it has nothing to do with Rambo or SWAT. Two quick examples are getting into a wreck or searching a car loaded with dope.

or........maybe he wants to carry it on duty from a baldric (black to match his duty leather. That would look cool in dress uniform!). Or....in his trickie bag........ or maybe just in the ride somewheres.

I'm thinking one of the ScrapYards now.

TWITCHYBLADE: The only 2 that come to my mind, would be the Glock 78 Field knife and the Schrade "Survival Extreme" SCHF2. Both are cheap enough, that if the sheaths aren't, you could still have enough money to have a "Kydex" sheath made. Henry
