Fending off wild dogs (from a runners prospective)

Ammonia in a small squirt bottle, Right in the eyes of the Alpha leading the charge. The others will lose interest fast!

From everything I have ever read bear spray is legal everywhere except some national parks. Cabela's will ship it to you. If you are nervous that you might run into a lawman that is unclear on the matter I am sure if you paid a visit to your local PD first and asked to speak with the person in charge to explain the matter it would set your mind at ease.

Chain. This has been my go-to for years. Practice with it so you know how to redirect after impacts and deal with rebounds. I know it isn't a jet pack or a 50 cal, but it works. Or to be more precise, it CAN work.

You can use a length of chain from the hardware store or pick up a choker from your local pet or S&M store.

Come on, flexible weapons are among the most difficult weapons to master. Effective yes, and amazing, but they aren't an easy thing to get up to speed on quick.

Get outside the wire bro. Jordan's got a black market. See what you can find.

Paracord, steel ball bearing, Monkey fist, neck lanyard..

Something like this, but longer.. Tie a snap ring into it, and it could be a 30"+ mellon cracker!

It's all legal. It's stiff enough to swing controllably (not like chain), and leaves one hell of a impression.

A small fog horn that will startle a pack into retreat. Won't work indefinately, but might get you out of a jam the first time or two until they get used to it.

Been here before, carried pepper spray and changed my route. A bright flashlight also works, 300 lumen strobe at least.

City folks!

The way dogs work is that one or two will attack you from the front, and a couple from the sides, but the real attack will come from behind. The intent is to ham string you and then you are done for. If you cannot carry a gun, get a steel ASP. I carry the 16" but for this you will need the 21", I would think. You will need to seriously hurt the lead dog and the ones attacking from the rear. Maybe you will need to bash it brains out with the first hit. The attack will happen very fast. I would also carry a large knife, like a Spyderco Endura (light yet long enough) on my weak hand side in case my strong hand with the baton is attacked. But, keep it in reach of the strong hand.
Pepper spray would probably work, but, as you said, you cannot get anyone to ship it to you. What you need to do there (and still have the baton) is to get someone (family, friend) to ship it to you. But, it is an aerosol so that will not be easy. Don't buy local made pepper spray. Get American made pepper spray. (ACE Hardware, most sporting goods places). knifeworks.com carries the ASP and the Endura.

(BTW, been there, done that, 2x and survived both).

Cold Steel Inferno is probably your best bet. My mother, father and brother are all veterinarians and they all feel this is one of the best ways to deter an attack. Raise Your voice as loud as you can and spray!

I gotta say my go to choice would be either bear spray if legal or carefully choosen pepper spray. The tighter the spray the less wind will effect it, but a less tight spray may work better with multiple dogs.

What about those jogger's sprays that hook on your hand? One it each would deter a lot of those sensitive nosed k9's

If guns are not an option, I'd go with a stick or pepper spray. I like the ammonia idea, my sister used to use one of those fake plastic lemons you get in a grocery store, she swore by them when she ran, would make the most aggressive dog turn tail.

Like others have said, always take out the alpha first if you can. While I'm a dog lover, I have no qualms about killing for self protection. None.

Cold Steel Sjambok is a great option but may be a tad short. Also a collapsable hiking stick (maybe fiberglass) should work.

Having a second person is a plus cause a pack will circle you!! I've been an ultra runner for years and a pack of dogs is always a scary problem . . . wild or not!

Stay on site and use a treadmill, if not, check into getting a rabies pre vaccination. getting bit isn't the worst thing that could happen to you.
people over here don't realize how many animals are running around in other parts of the world with rabies.
I've seen numerous dogs with rabies, a sambok and pepper spray will not deter them, I've personally had them attack the
4-runner I was driving. not chase, but run full speed into the side of the vehicle and try to bite the wheels.
good luck stop running off site.

That's a good point, stopping an animal with rabbies would probably be much harder. It is fatal in humans without treatment and from the videos I've seen it doesn't look fun! The fear of water aspect is crazy. Seeing people too afraid of a glass of water to take a sip is intensely disturbing.

THAT is an extremely good point ! My friend's wife was fishing at a high mountain lake, above tree line, she saw something swimming toward her. The closer it got she kept asking her self why is a squirrel swimming in a lake ABOVE tree line ? It couldn't be a squirrel. It was and it climbed out of the water and went straight for her bare legs like a shot. She was darned athletic and gave it a nice old style mountaineering booted soccer kick right in the face and it went flying back out into the water.

It came at her again in exactly the same way. Luckily she had my friend's SUPER DOG with her. The smartest dog I have ever been around. She was a little samoyed. The dog jumped between the woman and the rabid squirrel and shook it and broke it's neck.

True story.

I'm liking my flame thrower more and more.

one or two will attack you from the front, and a couple from the sides, but the real attack will come from behind.

Sounds reminiscent of a velociraptor attack

So I should be good if that happens to me, again.:)

PS: every time I hear some one recommend a hollow hiking staff especially the collapsable ones . . . I just cringe. That is more than likely going to just bust or fold in half on the second hit and leave you to the dogs as it were. Even solid aluminum rod that size if it isn't a seriously good alloy AND heat treated is going to bend over and be less than ideal. Hollow ? Nah dude, nah. Fiberglass ? Nope.

PPS: afraid of a glass of water. I guess the squirrel didn't get the memo or it had something else wrong with it besides rabies.

Seen them do the same thing here, dog got itself killed trying to bite out tires.

Seen them do the same thing here, dog got itself killed trying to bite out tires. Worst part is, it's all on site... Zero animal controll what so ever.

sounds like your PM isn't taking care of his job. Talk to those "Post Standers" and see what they can do. I don't know what kind of contract you're on but usually the company doesn't want its contractors getting hurt unless its part of the job.
