Fending off wild dogs (from a runners prospective)

Carry a feral cat, fox, rabbit, etc. to release in case of a dog pack emergency. Or maybe carry a small smart phone with a loud speaker and play a lion's roar. Or attach a poisoned knife tip to the front of your running shoes that pop out when needed, see James Bond movie From Russia With Love for details.

Or maybe just carry a bag of small assorted milk bones or other doggie treats. Toss and back away.

dogs are pretty tough especially if they are wild. when I used to run a lot when I lived in the country I carried a ruger sp101 or my ppk. on occasions when I didn't carry a gun I wore a cold steel trailmaster on my belt.

sounds like your PM isn't taking care of his job. Talk to those "Post Standers" and see what they can do. I don't know what kind of contract you're on but usually the company doesn't want its contractors getting hurt unless its part of the job.

It's a military deployment, we can't do anything. We would have to get approval from the host country to start killing dogs outside of self defence.

Try a squirt gun filled with vinegar. When cycling on one of my favorite loops I used to regularly get chased by a German Shepherd that would try to bite my legs and tires. He belonged to a family along my route so I didn't want to go all scorched earth on him. Another cyclist recommended that I carry a squirt gun to spray the face of the unfriendly pooch in the face and it worked much better than trying to bonk him on the nose with my tire pump. The hardest part is finding a squirt of decent quality that won't leak out your liquid ammo.

Treadmill, run with a few other guys? If its that bad, you probably don't want to be out there alone and just wearing shorts and a tee shirt if you have to fight them.

Cold Steel Inferno is probably your best bet. My mother, father and brother are all veterinarians and they all feel this is one of the best ways to deter an attack. Raise Your voice as loud as you can and spray!

Given that CS has stopped making it, not so much.

Sjambok is a great idea. They are lightweight and easy to use. I've been forced to deal with dogs in the past with one and they really don't like it.

Another option that would take a bit of training would be a snake whip. You have to run in khakis and a leather jacket for that though
