I am looking to add some Ferro rods to my survival/camping gear.

What is the best production rod out there?
How do you like to carry them.

The 'Light My Fire' brand of firesteels are generally the mainstay. The Army model is quite 'full sized' and easy to use. Throws good sparks and will last a long, long time.

A couple of my knife sheaths have either firesteel loops or an attached pouch that I stash the firesteel in, or I just throw it in my pack.

There are lots of people selling 'bare' firesteels, so you can throw your own handle on if you want.

I have a couple of these - they seem to throw sparks as good as my LMF Army models (they are a little smaller in diameter 5/16 vs. 3/8)

I don't have a scout to compare, but they are approx. 3.875" OAL with the exposed portion of ferro rod about 2.75", diameter about 5/16.

A lot of the guys here ask me to put a firesteel loop on the sides of the sheath for the knives I make. Keeps it handy. (look familiar, tonym?)

I just ordered one of these

The Bunker is a full 1/2 inch thick and 4-inches long. Capable of starting tens of thousands of fires, put The Bunker firesteel in your bunker and never worry again about kindling a blaze.

When it arrives, I'll let you know how it works.

Cool I might get one of those big azz 1/2 ones.....Would be cool paired up with a big chopper.

I used a drill press and did it slowly. First with a smaller bit as a pilot hole then with a bigger one. Not even a spark.

It's actually goinggear.com. I don't want people wandering into the forums and yelling at me because I don't have anything for sale there. :)
