Fiddleback Collections

I meant the box I keep my Fiddlebacks in!!!

Will, your next purchase should probably be a really big pair of cowboy boots, mainly for the big knives. I never forget the pool table picture of your collection some months ago, picturing your wife coming downstairs while you were shooting the pictures. My minds eye had you shoving Fiddlebacks in every pocket, trying to rapidly hide them.

This has been a big reason that I have not posted full collection pics, my wife might walk in and comprehend the vastness of my addiction. Also, I was shooting pictures once, and my wife walked in and said "who takes pictures of their knives?"

My wife often asks me how many knives I need. Vaguely responding 'As many as necessary' seems to be working at the present.

LMAO..... Well...... I was at work, those are the pool tables in my cafe in the bowling center! LOL..... Early in the am with no customers around!

The common answer among cyclists when asked how many bikes does one need is "n + 1."

Therefore, when asked how many knives does one need, the answer should be "k + 1." :D

Keeping the wife from knowing the size of the addiction is a pastime of mine as well.

Michael, I'd get slapped if the words economical & knives were used in the same sentence! My desire to participate in this forum & own such nice blades trumps economical spending. But that's me, I'm sure some of these guys depend and count on their knives on a daily basis.

Therein lies the pun, and the fun. It is the truth, and not our spending, that we are inclined to be economical about. 😉

Just a little Friday update ;)

Will,

Thanks for posting the current collection photo. This thread has suffered from a lack of photo updates recently. Your update was very timely to get it back on track.

I love seeing the the result of months of buying, selling, and trading to refine your collection to your favorite users. I also admire the way that you have established subsets of matching themes (i.e. Desert Ironwood with matching liners, Bocotes that look like they came from the same block of wood, Coffeebag/Drunken Shadetree burlap on big and small knives, Ruby Shadetree burlaps, Macasser Ebony, and that one Bone White Recluse as an accent mark for variety.) Great stuff my friend!

As always, I am running a couple of months behind you in reaching my ideal collection. I am close. I will post an updated photo in a few weeks when I have my full collection back home.

Congratulations on scoring the first Patch knife today by the way. When I saw the Bocote scales on that one in fotki, I knew that you would go after it. I guess that you owe an updated collection photo after it arrives so that we can see how it compares size-wise to the other small knives in your collection.

Best regards,

Phil

Hey Phil,
Thanks for all of positive feedback! I've got to tell you my friend, its been a pretty exciting ride, but I think that I've finally reached a bit of a fiddleback nirvana (for now :D). For me all of this has been two fold; I obviously wanted functional, well crafted tools -- each of which that would serve their own unique functional purpose, while each having their own aesthetic personality. Now, I'm a pretty firm believer in making informed decisions, and in doing so decided that the best way to determine what would / wouldn't work for me (or appeal to me) would be to actually handle each knife. Now while his led to some pretty interesting action on the flea market it also allowed me to learn a lot about what I wanted in an edged tool and how even the most minute design changes could affect how a knife handles. In the end, my evaluative process has led me to a collection that suits many needs for me these days. Truth be told, I edc folders about 99% of the time, but I use / carry / woods bum every one of my fiddlebacks every chance I get! Now while I may have a few functional redundancies in the lot (I.e. slicers, pointy knives, choppers, etc) each one of 'em presents a unique usage experience in their intended task.

On a separate note, I'm stoked to see the next evolution of your collection -- I'd say you have the market cornered on burlap exotics, and by my eye, each of your examples are the epitome of their profiles, so it will be hard to top your current stable!

The patch knife is a very cool piece; I'm already hankering for a 1/8 or 3/32" TT one, but I am sure that it will prove to be an indispensable profile!

None the less, I'm glad I could rekindle this thread -- I'm looking forward to more updates from the group to see what's made its way out into our little ecosystem as of late!

Best,

Will

I absolutely love perusing through these pages and seeing how much everyone's collections change. It's amazing!

Update from me too in a week or so!:D I definitely notice a little sense of remorse when I see some of my old photo's. It helps knowing that each and every one went to a good home.
