Fiddleback Forge Knives “Woodsman “ Passaround

I got it today. I'm in love. This might be "the one".

I will do a more in-depth review with pics later. First impressions: I like Andy's sheath. (I'm sure the JRE sheaths will be fine). I like how much handle sticks out of the sheath. Easy to grab, easy to replace in sheath.
It is NOT as big a knife as I imagined. Came sharp (thanks Jake!). The handle is fat and sassy and I dig it. Andy, the seamlessness of the woods melded together is amazing. I love how thick the blade is and the length of it. One change might be to angle down the front of the scales next to the blade for easier use of the chest grip. (Not that this is a problem-just an idea).

Excellent. Glad you like it!!! Y'all do the chest grip a bit different than me. I put my thumb behind the blade, whereas Bear the Dog tought folks to put it on a ramp and on the side of the blade. Works the same either way.

A steep ramp there makes the area near where the edge starts thinner, so you can't get as good a grip for heavy fist cuts. Also, it moves the pins back (those are corby bolts, not solid pins). And it thins out the wood where it needs some thickness IMO. Lots of guys have thin tindrils of cross grain woods at the ricasso area. Thats not good. Wood is weak cross grain.

Awesome! Im glad it came safe and you are happy with the edge. I went and made a new strop just for this one.

Look forward to your review brother.

Hey Fellas, I have an update for you.

Orrey45 has to back out of the passaround. He will be out of the country for awhile and doesn't want to hold things up.

Rockywolf, would you please cross him of the list. He was following TexasTony.

Thanks buddy.

Ok. No pics this part of the review, just some thoughts instead.

I used the knife today to shave some tinder/kindling for an upcoming fire I paln to make near my "work-in-progress" shelter. Unbelievablely nice to work with this knife. I have several other knives that are in the same category-blade length/handle length/convex grind. I like all of them, yet this one is calling me. Maybe it's due to the handle shape or contours, I'm not sure. I will post some comparison pics later so you guys can see what I mean.

Blade height allowed for me to choke up on the blade itself to carve a bit-very nice. Also, I batonned (with the heel of my hand) through a thin, very dry stick I had propped up in my room. I think the stick was one a son had shaved the bark off last summer. Anyway, I shaved a bunch of nice curls, then split it into small 6 inch long pieces and will make a fire with it in the next few days. The knife was a dream to works with and had me wondering what it will do when I drag it outside and turn it loose on some bigger wood. I am going to plan a menu with lots of cutting involved and will give it a workout in the kitchen too.

The size of this knife doesn't have me hesitating AT ALL when thinking about going on longer hikes. I won't care about the extra weight, knowing I have this baby by my side.

More to come...stay tuned. Same Bat time, same Bat station! :D

Andy, Tony and the rest,

I would like to apologize for having to drop out of this passaround. I have been following the thread and looking forward to getting my chance to partake in the fun but I won't be able to get my turn. My rotation got bumped and I will be heading out of the country at the end of the month.

Thanks,
Blake

Edit: Sorry for being misleading, I am not military. I am in the Oil and Gas industry and will be heading to Africa.

The best thing about this passaround is that you guys are liking the knife's performance in the woods.

THanks for your time and effort, all of you!

I put Sharp Eye in Orrey's spot. He let Orrey have the spot after calling it first, so I thought he should be the one who gets to participate in his stead.

Sharp Eye, I sent you a PM to send your info to me and I will hand write it on the passaround list.

Ok a few quick pics from this weekend. Some taken from a crappy cell phone so I apologize for the quality!

In hand-great feel fits like a dream.

I plan to take it outdoors in the next couple days, shoot a few more pics, then off it goes! I will miss it...;)

Oooh Chianti!

Looks like we have the same taste in wine and knives!

Just in case; stay away from my wife!!!!!:D

Ok last set of pics before I mail it tomorrow to Mike.

This knife is NOT a chopper! Very lightly, sure, but it is a slicer, dicer, whittler, batonner first and foremost. Bring a bigger knife or an axe if you want heavy chopping work to be done. The tip is excellent at making holes and stout enough to to some torquing as seen in the following picture. This was about 10 seconds of drilling. I lopped off a couple branches from the ol' Xmas tree sitting in the firepit. Showed it in hand with a mitten-worked will (just a bit slippery, but that was the fleece mitten's fault).

This knife has a special place for me as it has been (and will be) handled by guys I consider friends and I hope to get to know as time goes by. Thanks for the chance at the passaround Andy. I appreciate such a fine tool you sweated over.

Steve
