Fiddleback Forge Knives “Woodsman “ Passaround

Im gonna call this the freakin Ghost Knife!! It appears to be moving from person to person, but cant be seen.... like a ninja! Wheres all the Pics and reviews????;)

Agreed, we need pics and reviews, and not the "well that only took 10 seconds kind too."

Bring it!

I got the knife on the way to work today.

It's really nice.

I just want to comment on something right away. Seems like you see a lot of makers saying they make convex edges but when you get the knife it is NOT convex.

This knife has a true convex edge. I don't have to hold it up to the light to see if there is any convex to it. It IS convex.

Two questions:

#1 it's dark by the time I get home in the PM. Can I keep it till this weekend? I promise a good review with lots of pics.

#2 seems like it needs sharpened. I think it needs stropped with some 1500 grit to bring it up to hair popping. Is that OK.

The handle by the way looks even nicer in person. The laminations and fit to the tang are flawless.:cool:

Take your time HD, thanks for the heads up! I don't think Andy will mind the stropping.

Hey! Thats great! I'm glad you got it, and I am glad your first impressions are good. Please sharpen and use it till you're happy you're given it a good go round.

OK.

So do you have some sort of a planer or something to get that wood flat enough to fit together like that? I mean the lamination is perfect.

I do have a planer, but it would never work for pieces this short. I use the table saw and sandpaper mostly. If I get a piece from a tree (like the elm you sent me), I use my jointer to flatten two sides square to one another, then I move to the table saw. IMO, its important for a shop to be equipped with a really good table saw. Even for a knifemaker, it’s a foundation kind of machine. I buy really good blades to go on the saw, and they leave a finish on the wood that is very close to glue up ready. A few minutes on sandpaper laid on a flat surface and I’m good to go.

My table saw died but if I get a new one I want to figure out what blades you are using. That's great it's cutting them so smooth.

Hey guys, I know we all are anxious for pictures from reviewers. I have been in contact with Valcas1 and he is going through some personal things that trump getting pics up.

He will not be disqualified for the prize as I feel he kept me and Andy in the loop and he is more than welcome in anyother passarounds I do.

I'm sharpening it now. Still on line for doing pics and review this weekend.

Am I the second person in the lineup? It seemed fairly dull for the second person:confused: Out near the tip seemed to still have the "factory" edge:D but the cutting area is gonna need some 600 grit. I tried 1500 last night but that doesn't take off enough.

I usually sharpen with 220 and 400. I've never sharpened an edge up to 1500. Do it up and don't worry about scratching it!

You're the 4th person, btw.

OK, there are already scratches on one side but came that way. 4th person.

I must have missed the other reviews.

I think Andy put most of those scratches on it:D

1st me, my review is up

2nd Marcelo, his review is up.

3rd Valcas1, his review will come soon.

How do you like it so far?

Yea, I don't baby my knives. They get scratched up. I don't mirror the edge. I like em sharp fast, and toothy.

I hiked up in the woods yesterday with a pack basket full of knives. Took about 4 khukuri pics and my battery went dead.:thumbdn::rolleyes: After climbing a huge hill:mad::p

I'm off all Christmas eve, I recharged my camera and I'll finish up and send it out Friday if it's ok?

I DID do some cutting. Handle is great. Don't want to ruin my review but I think that this blades forte' is using it with a baton, because the blade is so much longer than your average, you can split some decent size stuff with it. You can also "chop" with it using a baton. I'll illustrate

OK Review. I'll save my conclusions for last.

I took it along this weekend to do some trail clearing. This was the first branch I whacked with it.

Next I did a combination of whacking and whittling this branch in two:

This is a big knife! Here it is compared in size to a Skookum Bush Tool.

Here's a shot showing what an ergonomic handle it has.

L to R

Muskrat Man Fulltang Pukko, Charlie May Scandi Skifa, Skookum Bush Tool, FB Woodsman,SWC Bushcraft, Charlie May Swamp Oak.

The handle feels great. I wouldn't call this a bushcraft knife because it is much larger, and has a convex not a scandi edge, so it is not suited to carving stuff. However it's got a bushcraft handle that is super comfortable.

Not sure this pic is good enough to show it, but it has a beautiful convex edge on it. While this knife does not cut as deep with as little force as a scandi, it has a very nice edge and I would compare the edge geometry to something like a Fallkniven F1 or a Bark River Bravo 1. Whittles fine.

It also throws demonic sparks from a firesteel. Scarey!

More at lunch!

I can't see any of the other pics except mine cause they are all photobucket:(
