Hi. I have a question for Mr. Surls or anyone that may know the answer. I've purchased the Stingray on this sale and I was wondering what type of finish is used on the wood (I would guess some type of buffing wax). The reason for my question is that I want to avoid using any cleaning solutions that could compromise the integrity of the finish. Also, do you have any recommendations on what should be used ?

Thanks,
Mark

Mark, Phil summed it up, the howards is the best.

Thank you all, I really appreciate the info. I don't mind getting my knives in "the murk" but I also like to restore them when I get them home. Looks like it's time to buy some Howards

Regards,

Mark

Only issue for me is that it is not foodsafe. Howard's has a butcher block conditioner that is foodsafe if it is a concern.

We use Howard's feed and wax
Beeswax and orange oil

So, what is the oil that ships on the blade? I want to keep a lite coat of oil on my blades while in storage and not sure what to use....mostly to prevent rust.

Use mineral oil or renaissance wax.

Just my opinion of course but here's my advice:

Go to your local grocery store or walgreens or CVS and buy a bottle of Mineral Oil USP for about $2. Food safe, won't go rancid, put it on everything. Use the extra money and time you saved to buy and play with more Fiddlebacks.

I like to use this because its considered food safe all natural and non-toxic.

785-9000.jpgTraditional tools and knives are made of carbon steel. Many of the very best edges are made of carbon steel (of one type or another). There is one problem with carbon steel compared with stainless steel, it rusts. Not only is the rusting unsightly, it tends to dull your edge prematurely.

Camellia oil is a natural oil made from the seeds of an evergreen plant in the*camelliagenus. The seeds are cultivated in Asia and pressed to produce the camellia oil. The oil is very light and unlike other natural oils, it's not likely to dry and gum up.

Our Camellia Oil is bottled in an 8 ounce container (245 ml is you're into the metric system). The spray applicator makes applying very easy. Imported from Japan.

Tool Tip:*Not only does Camellia Oil work well on knives and tools for protecting rust, you can also use it on your hand planes to help lubricate bottom. When I start to feel some friction on the bottom of my plane I just give it a quick spray, then buff it in with cloth. You'll be shocked how much less effort hand planing requires with the bottom lightly lubricated.

I use camellia oil as well on my blades, have used it on my straight razors for a few years without any sign of rust. An applicator is available for it that makes application very easy on knives.
