Fiddleback Friday the 13th!!! 12/13/13

Still looking... I got fiddleback fever something fierce!

So, just out of curiosity, are you looking at using or collecting...or both :) If using, what are your typical uses of a knife? Are you thinking hunting, fishing, bushcrafting, the outdoors, cooking, outdoor cooking? What are your interests

Mostly edc use mixed with some outdoor stuff (fishing camping buscrafting). I tell myself I don't just collect because that's not practical but I have always loved knives and these are some the the nicest. I do plan to work them though!

You need to claim it then ;) If I didn't have one one the way already that is what I would have bought
Sorry I know it's a bit immature it just helps to get it out. I can probably only afford one or two more fiddlebacks (probably not even that) so it really is a tough decision.

Mist, what do you think of 1/8" knives doing camp chores? I know you seem to prefer 5/32" for all around.

I only carry my 1/8" Sneaky Pete. Over Thanksgiving, I pushed the edge through squirrel leg bones (8 bones) with a tap with my palm to the spine. (PoP). No edge damage. 4" blades aren't much for chopping. But I do process firewood with mine. This means it handles light batonning through clear wood. If you wail on it and try to test it throiugh knots, expect disapointment.

Mist,

Which is lighter in 1/8" SFT or tapered tang?

The tapered tang is lighter by far because it starts out SFT'd. All the blades get the lightning holes when they are drilled for pins.

You need to get a Bushfinger and base your future purchases from that knife. If you're going to beat it up, get a thicker one. If you are a slicer, then get an 1/8" one. If you really liie fine edges and careful cutting, get on in 3/32 if I ever make them again that way.

I never sharpen the back side. Well, maybe once. Otherwise its just a false edge.

Thanks Andy- funds sent. That Nessmuck looks like it will get the job done all day long with no muss or fuss.

Bill

Someone buy me a Xmas present 1/8" Woodchuck !!!

Believe me friend I would buy is both one if I could. The stripe in the Osage handle is sweet... But alas I will have to wait until next week I am holding out for that special one. I work Christmas so time and a half with help fund it.

all -- quick question; I'm looking for sheathes for my two (new) sneaky petes; any recommendations? Based on what I have read on the forums, it looks like Diomedes industries, and RL (?) are recommended for leather, but what about kydex? I was thinking of getting a roto-clip kydex for the blue SP, and would like to go with someone who already has a mold for the knife..

Thanks!

I'll take the:

2013 1213 011 – Bushcrafter, Arizona Desert Ironwood over natural canvas with a white g10 pisntripe, SFT Tang, Convex on 1/8” thick 3D Spalted 01 steel - $255

Thanks Andy!

These are all hand carved handles. I shape each one by hand. Kydex would have to be made to fit each knife seperately. This is the great disadvantage kydex suppliers have when dealing with handmade knives.

Diomedes, Rick Lowe, and Heber Ellsworth should all have patterns for that model.

You got it Phillip! thanks!

Man those scorpions are so damn nice! Talk about a self defense item…also the thinner handle must really feel nice in the hand.

If I gave the impression that 4-inch blades are much on chopping I did not mean to, obviously they aren't going to be the optimum size for it. The only reason it became a factor for me was all of the various brier vines in the areas I frequented most in the temperate rain forest where I lived. I prefer to not grab them and cut through them...so got used to quick snap cuts through them with whatever knife I had on me :)

I will take:2013 1213 002 – Scorpion, Black Kirinite with black canvas bolsters and liners, Tapered Tang, Convex on 1/8” thick 3D Spalted 01 steel - $295
