Fiddleback User Pics

I think I've mentioned before that I was on the hunt for a NKP friendly Fiddleback. Last Christmas while opening gifts with the in-laws, my S-I-L freaked when I pulled out a Spyderco to help open a gift. I normally try and keep at least one little pocket knife on me to use when I think the situation calls for something other than the Fiddleback that's on my hip or the large Spyderco that's in my pocket although most of the time I don't really care too much about what people think. Mainly just for my S-I-L who thinks I'm going to cut up her children and eat them for dinner.

Well, at my son's birthday party over the weekend, as luck would have it, the only knife I had on my was my uber scary and tactical looking Fiddleback. Those of you thinking that you want a Sneaky Pete or Fighter for your tactical needs don't know what you're missing because apparently the following knife is all the tactical you need.

I present to you: THE RUNT!

Cool pics Hugh! I like that crossbow.

Thanks man! I thought he did a good job. Quite creative. ;)

The more I look at the Runt, the more I like it. Looks like a handy little blade!

Yep. I went hiking at Fall Creek Falls a few autumns back. I knew it would be crowded, so just to keep tensions to a minimum I carried a cord-wrapped Becker BZK-11 CSM around my neck under my shirt, and kept the full sized fixed blade out of site in my shoulder bag. I was sitting on a rock just off the trail playing with some shelf fungus with flint and steel. I had whittled a few feather sticks just in case I got it to work, and had the BK-11 laying by them on the rock. Sure enough, a couple came down the trail, saw me smacking the steel with the chert and walked over out of curiosity. Then she looked at the knife on the rock and said "wow, why do you carry a knife that size here?" I said, yeah, I'm really not overly happy about it myself, but the sheeple tend to get a bit nervous whenever I carry a real knife here. It took a few seconds, then gave me a look that was a mix of confusion and anger at my insult, and they went on their way. Hell, she may have had a coronary had she seen the old SOG Bowie in my shoulder bag. People just kill me.

Gotta get this bad boy out in the woods....and soon.

fiddleback forge 18" machete...only a few hours old and it's already earning its keep...tested it on a sycamore branch before using it on the neighbor's tree:

the neighbor's tree that they want to get rid of since it's growing in between the fence and their garage. i can't quite reach around the trunk to completely de-bark it so once in awhile i trim all the pinky finger-sized branches and leaves to see if it'll die...the neighbor thinks i'm doing them a favor but in reality i look forward to chopping it every few months :D

Thanks Jay, I have been thinking about getting a larger Fiddleback machete, but the 12 really does suit my needs well and I like the thicker blade of the 12. How are you liking the 18 compared to the 12?

I'm interested in the 12" vs 18" analysis as well.

And I like that Kifaru Timberline!

Tradition holds that the first beverage drank from a handmade kuksa is either coffee or whiskey. It's too early this campin trip for the latter.

That turned out awesome schmittie! Nicely done!

Great little project. Nice pictures.

If you find time, could you share some tutorial for making kuksa? Type of wood, sanding, finishing?

Thanks bud. As far as a tutorial, this is only my first attempt at such a thing. There are far more experienced people out there. YouTube has lots of videos and the Internet is full of pictures and instructions. The research can be fun in itself.

Was able to acquire a Scandi Bushfinger. I love the coffee bag and orange on this one. And the spalting is amazing. Nice and sharp and a great carver of course.
