Thank God I don't deal with the horrific ATL traffic very often. I would say that I have never spent more than 2 hours in stop and go. But since you asked for a story, last weekend I was going to AL to see Modest Mouse. It was a saturday afternoon and we spent about an hour moving maybe 5mph because they had a lane shut down.
Boring story, I know, but it was all I had...
Thanks for the chance!

Maybe an hour or so?

Classic winter storm...4 hours to to a 20 mile or so trip home for a training for work. The day before when folks asked about the storm and canceling, anyone who inquired got yelled at (was prison work). Dude who did the yelling was all "well this was a bad idea!" on the day of the storm! Lol!

4 hours on the way home from Ft. Lauderdale FL to Cincinnati. We made it to Knoxville and then traffic came to a dead stop for 2 hours. It turns out a tractor trailer 5 miles ahead had flipped and turned sideways so my buddy Nick and I tried to take a detour that lasted another two hours to route around. All in all we made it home 8 hours later with a few more memories and more sight seeing than we planned. I chalked it up to a good experience seeing as how we didn't have anything else planned.

When I first moved to Clemson I went to the grocery store about 1 hour before a big football game was ending. I ended up leaving the store about the same time as the game ended and got stuck in traffic about 10 min from my house for 2 hours. Needless to say I now plan my outings more carefully on game days :p

Driving from Wisconsin to Florida a couple of years ago we hit construction in Indianapolis. We always leave for our trips around the time the kids go to bed so that they sleep for the majority of the drive. We left home around 8:00 PM, so we hit Indianapolis around midnight. Apparently, that was the exact time that the road crew in Indianapolis decided that most people didn't have anywhere to be. They pulled a big old crane out into the freeway and stopped traffic while they attached a chunk of something to the overpass. I couldn't see exactly what it was as we were a couple cars back. I do know that I had enough time to turn the car off, recline my seat, and take a little nap. We ended up being there for about 2 hours before they were clear and we could go on our way. Pretty frustrating way to start our vacation, but what are you going to do? Somebody has to be the schlub stuck waiting for the crane.

Heading up to Lake Tahoe from the Bay Area to take advantage of a huge snow storm. We planned to ride in a group but the driver backed out so we had to rent a 4x4 and head up on our own. We got stuck at chain control and what normally is a 4 hour drive turned into about 8 hours on the road. We were rewarded with the best day of skiing the following morning.

4 hours, on my way back from Atlanta to northern Kentucky. We got stuck in the mountains behind a nasty wreck some miles ahead of us on a 2 lane road.

5+ hours on interstate near Donner Summit due to a big rig jack-knife and flipping , blocking all lanes and a pileup behind it , during a snow storm.

Thank you for the chance at your generous GAW!

I was driving up past LA and there was some type of accident or car chase or something and they shut everything down for most of the day. I'm not exactly sure how long I sat but it was at least 3 hours. Finally they starting letting people get on the wrong side of the freeway so they could allow people to slowly start getting off. It was pretty atrocious...

Thanks Whitty! Also, any date set for a return trip to the Forge?

I spent 13 years commuting from Vancouver, WA to Wilsonville, OR. About 26 miles. Every day was a gridlock longest trip was about six hours home in snow. ( rare for the area few know how to drive in it)
I left a piece of my sanity on that stretch of highway.

Just ran the random number generator and it pulled #35. Getting ready to go check and see if it is an official entry!

Thank you to everyone for playing and recalling your horrific traffic stories! Hopefully the next time we do this it will be about our great trip to Fiddleback Forge and the knife we brought back to giveaway!
