Field Knife 2.0

I know ManOFSteel would appreciate a righteous choil on the FK2.0. Don't let him convince you otherwise. Plus, I can use the choil to help me mount it on my mom's basement wall. Win!

Ok, I was joking. Slightly. My mom doesn't have a basement. Lol.

Seriously, as others have mentioned FK is near perfect. But should a version 1.5 or 2.0 come out, I'd like to see a flat pommel, hidden lanyard hole, slightly stubbier blade tip, and fancier handle hardware that can be easily taken on/off.

We all have to dream about something, right?

I actually want 4" of choil and only a little cutting edge

Hah. Here you go...

Did a bit of digging, and it seems like an update on a marbles trout knife pattern actually. Live and learn!

Right? Regular handle, 1" of cutting edge, nothing but choil. They can call it "just the tip".

I HATE choils on small knives, just for the record. I'm a firm believer that on a small knife you need a good, usable handle, and as much blade as you can get, starting directly after the handle.

I've gone through far too many knives that get hung up cutting stuff when I run into the choil. Sometimes I don't want to be careful and examine and think about what I'm cutting. I just want to stick and slice. That's what I do at work all day long, every day.

Any choils at all get in the way of that. Even "sharpening choils". How in the world do they make sharpening easier? They don't. You'd still begin sharpening the blade at the same place. It's just that with the sharpening choil you have a nice 3mm hole gouged out of the most useful part of your blade to hang up and snag and not cut stuff.

*Ok, choil rant mode over.

Interesting question. Personally I see no benefit from adding an inch to the FK. I wouldn't baton anything but kindling with it. I prefer into 6"and thicker stock as a heavy duty Batoning knife. I did split a 8-9" round of knotty cedar with a LC but it was ridiculous. For my uses and other knives/tool I have the FK is the perfect mid-size for me. I can see where the SK fits in, but I have. I desire to see the FK move to compete against the SK.

At this point I'm thinking EDC, FK, SK, LC, axe and saw. Pick then appropriate tool for the use/trip and I can't think of any base I don't have covered.

I should add, I've never held the SK or the EDC but based on my experience with tons of knives in various sizes, baring something like the EDC handle being a bad fit for my hand, or the SK having a terrible choil for me I am pretty confident with the above plan.

I tend to gravitate towards knives in the 5-6 inch range
They can do all small tasks and a few bigger ones: light chopping and battoning 4 inch logs

I have one field knife and find that it is perfect for my needs, have sliced the crap out of potatos and other veggies for stew, carved chunks of meat with it, then went out and chopped small limbs for tinder. The sheath works just fine, and like my few Busses I could get a custom sheath, which I might do someday.

I wasn't expecting a lot of the sheath given few less than positive remarks about the FK sheaths, but I'm honestly very impressed with it (mines the recent version). Not sure where the dislike comes from? Mines got perfect retention, and I dig the winkler-style square belt plate arrangement.

I also like how compact it is - very efficient use of space, and overall the general oval shape is a nice improvement on the arbitrary rectangle-with-a-hump-and-a-taper that most kydex sheaths wind up following.

It's a good sheath but it starts falling apart and loosening with use. The rivets are the let down IMO

That being said, it's a fantastic sheath to be shipped with a knife, leaving options for a custom sheath when needed.

Damn. That's a bummer.

Which version? The one on the right in the following pic is the version I have...

Question though: how do the rivets/grommets loosen if the 4 belt plate screws are keeping them in compression? Having trouble picturing it.
