Field testing the new finish...

Can you post a close up/macro style of the logo so we might get a better idea of the texture on the finish? It looks awesome for sure! I am trying to see if its a sand blast or bead blast finish

Here's a macro shot. And yes, you can indeed count the stars!

I can't believe how crisp that new engraving is!

Having an engraver in house has been worth every penny so far. We have been able to find a much clearer image and tweak the machine variables as needed to really dial the logos in. Guy has also been pushing the limits on how big he can get the engraving before I tell him to settle down. :) Hence the GIANT flag on that GSO-10 that was meant to stay in house.

Its a pitty that eventually I'm gonna rub that off beating through wood and such.

You would have to put in a good bit of work to rub these engravings off. For a short period of time we were contracting engraving out to a local company that only had a CO2 engraver (we couldn't find anyone with a laser engraver and the previous engraving company was in PA). The CO2 burns an image on the metal. Thanks to the Starter we were able to get the fiber laser engraver, which actually removes material. The logos are still on there after blasting a blade.

Well the cats outta the bag now! I'd still be happy even if they're a bit smaller considering the detail is so nice even on this 4.1. To be able to count the stars on an American Flag that is close to 1/4x3/8 or so is really impressive!

I don't know if I missed something, but I don't get the handle on this 4.1. The new GSOs won't have those fasteners anymore...first I thought the scales just aren't ready yet, so they threw an old set on a new 4.1 blade, but then I realized they wouldn't fit due to the design changes....so, maybe they had the new blade and scales but not the new fasteners yet, or is this simply an old 4.1 with the new HT and finishing? Or should I not care so much??

I just read the other thread on this topic and got my answer....it is an old factory 2nd with the new HT & finish for R&D....very cool....great, efficient use of what's already laying around the shop - can't wait to get my two Starters with this new finish. Does anyone know if the 5s that are shipping now underwent the newer HT protocol as well??

Unfortunately, the GSO-5 blades were not done with the new heat treat. They actually went through that process a few months ago, before we really started this R&D project.

That's cool, and thanks for your reply...how about the Starter 5.1 and or 4.1s?? I know they'll have the new finish, but will they have the new HT protocol....esp. the 5.1 as it's in production now?? No matter what the answer is, not a big deal either way, because the former HT was/is awesome anyhow....

Speaking of awesomer, here is one of ni1s' pics compared to a pic Guy posted a long time ago addressing questions about coloring in the jimping and cutting marks on the spine. When Guy says crisper lines and tighter fit and finish he is not messing around!

Wow Silver, not messing around at all! Thanks for posting these pics, really tells the story well. It's funny, SK was already a bargain in every way, a great line of knives in every way...but these Starters and all of the knives to follow really are going to be a noticeable step up in refinement and quality.....not to even mention the design improvements Guy has enacted, and they lowered their prices on some models! If they are able to solve the supply side of the equation, Guy & Ellie are going to own the knife industry. Instead of her '97 Civic, Ellie's going to be dropped off at the shop each day in their diamond-incrusted helicopter.

All of the new spec models, including the GSO-5.1, will be to the new heat treat protocol. There are a few more blades going out for field testing, but we have been really pleased with it in house. So we are planning to move forward with the new heat treat as the standard.

Yep, the tumbling media was too large to get in there and clean up in the jimping slots. The blasting media does not have the same problem.

Technically, I don't have any car right now. Guy is my chauffeur. But if we are getting a diamond-incrusted helicopter I'm sure we can also afford flying lessons, so there will be none of this "dropped off" nonsense.

Ni1s, did you beat on this thing yet? I want to see that finish after some serious batoning and carving!

Ellie,

So if the knife is blasted and peened, will the finish come off like a regular bead blasted knife? Also, How do you guys maintain the price with all these upgrades? I can think of companies that will charge double your price if they make those type of knife.
