Field testing the new finish...

That's a really interesting photo, thank you for sharing it. I'd assume the rocks as well, but did you wiggle the edge in the joints of the chicken-bones at all? I'm just surprised by that.

I also impressed by how rough the new finish looks compared to the smooth stonewash... evidently not rough enough to cause much drag and prevent an easy cleaning

I guess I might have wiggled it a little bit, but unintentionally in that case. So not much.

The finish doesn't look as rough IRL as the macro photos does. But def more than the previous finish.

Bumping this thread.

I received one of these knives from Guy and have been putting it through the paces, have a bunch of video that still needs editing, but here are some pics. Hopefully I'll butcher a couple of roosters with it this weekend.

ni1s, would you prefer I start a new thread or keep this one going with my additions?

Feel free to continue here if you like! But there seemed to be some problems with the urls to the pics you just posted? Looking forward to hear your thoughts.

I think i fixed the embedding - google changed the settings in "google photo" so now I have to access the pics through picassa directly to get the proper URL. Let me know if y'all can see them.

I should have a video edited and uploaded this weekend, and I'll follow with more photos of butchering some roosters. I do plan to give a detailed account of my feeling on the finish as well, still to come, just don't have time right now. As a quick comment, I like it, it still can "freckle" but nowhere near as bad as the stonewash as seen on the GSO-10. It's also much less reflective which may be desirable for some. It's not scratchy like the satin/machine finish on some of my other knives from Benchmade and Buck but not as smooth as the stonewash of previous runs. It also doesn't show wear as readily as the cerakote on the SK-4. You can see some edge-damage in the last photos that I induced cutting apart the metal-lip of a can like i did with the NeckerII in a previous video, you'll see that when this one's video goes up, I'll embed it here.

You sure can wear the new off of a knife in a hurry chiral. I can't wait for your videos dude. Nothing I hate worse than a flogging rooster. Put him in the pot!

LOL, my wife loves that quote  though it's from a rough movie (emotionally that is), and I have a hard time with Jude Law (Brit) and Nicole Kidman (Aussie) as Southerners ;)

Most of what you see on the blade in the last pic is just dirt and sap, scrubbed off with some soap and #0000 steel wool. I didn't show the spine there, but it has marks from scraping a ferro-rod that didn't scrub off so easily. Most of the edge-damage from wedging through the metal was restored with a few swipes on a DMT coarse (blue). The only scratches left on the bevel after I scrubbed it are very shallow and hard to see, probably the result of bits of sand that had been trapped in the sap and got scrubbed against the metal as I cleaned it. More pics to follow.

Renee Zellweger's character wrung its flogging neck though. She was a Texan once. :) Man Jude Law's character just couldn't win for losing in CM. A lot of great folk music, maybe the best part of the show for me.

I'm glad you're liking the finish Chiral, that sounds encouraging

Yeah,I bought the sound-track and my wife listens to it regularly, GREAT sound-track :thumbup:

I finished editing the video testing the finish, but it's still 25 minutes long... I think I'll break it into 2 parts before uploading. Included is some kitchen work, cardboard cutting, wood carving (curls), batonning, cutting glued-up carpet, plastic, metal can, digging in the dirt/sand/muck to cut roots, scrapping with the spine - wood and also firesteel - resharpening and cleaning AND (of course) throwing ;) I should have these up by tonight.

Alright, after some software glitches and re-uploads, it's finally there. Feel free to criticize the poor quality and also ask questions. The video is meant to give users an idea of what to expect from the finish and edge. More photos to follow:

Thanks for taking time to make the vid.
I personally like and prefer the original GSO stone wash finish over what to my eye looks like a grey flat matte finish.
And prefer my M-390 (4.1) and CPM-20CV (3.5), at these particular price points it must be stainless for me.
Btw, I'm having a lot of fun with my Strongarm (black plain edge) takes a serious licking and keeps on ticking.

Thank you, Chiral! Extensive testing and insightful commentary. I really enjoy your videos. Although, I did weep a little during the can and throwing portions :)
But hey, that's how you test it, by going beyond normal limits.:thumbup:

What a great video review! Thanks for taking the time to do a really thorough test, with no punches pulled. That was really a pleasure to watch.
