Fighting knife

If you have to carry a knife that folds, and defense is the primary mission, the Spyderco Manix 2XL is my first choice. Big, solid but fairly light for size, quick into action, sharp, ergonomic, tough. I carried one for several months in Afghanistan, on my last deployment.

Agreed.

Also, another small detail to consider, if you are fighting with a knife, and you win, you are going to want to clean your knife of blood and such afterwards....

Folding Knives have a lot more nooks and crannies to scrub then a good ol' reliable fixed blade...

"DA Autos" are more toys than anything else. Any good modern folder will be as quick into action, have fewer legal restrictions against carry, and will be stronger in use. It's really amazing that you ridicule the term "fighting folder"...and then, suggest a less appropriate knife! :D

I'm sure he is not deploying with it and I stand by my post

There are some fantastic DA auto that work very well

And if my primary concern was a defensive folder than why carry anything else

If he is deploying with it and needs a heavy hard use knife than again I stand by my post get a fixed blade

It seems most of us carrying knives for defense do so for peace of mind and for the confidence conveyed by having a tool that gives us a leg-up on assailants who outclass us in fight. Therefore, the folding fighter is a not a oxymoron. The navajas of Spain did strong work in this regard for about two hundred years and they varied from four to ten inches in blade length. The current incarnation of those Andalusian beasts is the Espada XL by Cold Steel. Check that one out.

I have a Espada

It is a neat knife but realistically to large to carry and if your willing to pack it than again you are better off carrying a good fixed blade

And why is that?

There nothing else in the production market that matches the size of blade, fit and finsh and lock strength.
It's an impressive knife in person.

Really brings a smile to the face when in the hand.

Now they have cts XHP steel too.

Me personally, I'll never buy one.

Too big to EDC and expensive.

I ran into a guy that carries one, its badass that some dudes EDC that stuff and deal with all the funny looks hahaha

So...basically its big. In fact, too big to carry and use. But the sheer act of carrying one makes one badass. At least when it comes to dealing with funny looks.

I don't quite see how that equates to

..., but it doesn't get any better than the Cold Steel Espada for folding fighters.

Seems like it may be the best for getting "looks." (Those aren't looks of intimidation/fear, by the way. But that's a whole other thread.)

Well, to each his own I guess.

And for the record, for a fighting folder I'd get a Spyderco Delica.

Pocketable. Doesn't attracts looks from people wondering why I feel the need to carry a comically oversized pentrator in my pants.

And, for the 99.99999999% of the carry time that the knife is being used for everyday tasks, it is an excellent functional knife.

And in that 0.00000001% of the time that it is being used in hand to hand close quarter combat, I'm sure you could hurt somebody with it.

I'm on the same page with you marcinek.

I'm a Delica guy all the way.

But the espada is a superior weapon.

But is it, if it is impractical to carry? Kinda like the whole "What's the best survival knife? The one you have on you." thing.

I mean, a thermonuclear weapon strapped to a badger on angel dust is a superior weapon too, but I dont want one in my pants on the bus in the morning. :)

Hahaha nice.

And yes.

But a very few of our fellow knife nuts go through great great length to carry the most impractical, cumbersome knives I've ever seen and either don't care about the social awkwardness or are completely oblivious.

I think that's badass.

Meanwhile I will carry my unassuming Delica.

I won't have to change my lifestyle or dress to suit my knife.

I can use it for my day to day utilities without notice.

I can buy a purpose built trainer and practice with it

If I was force to defend my life, The prosecution will have a harder time accusing me of using a "murder weapon"

99.999999999999999999999% of the time I will never use it for self defense.
I will verbally diffuse, de escalate or escape.

But remember this dudes asking for a fighting knife not a self defense knife.

When it come to pure fighting, in the thunderdome, haha

I'm running for the espada vs the delica

One of the best options for a defensive knife is a matriarch or similar shaped slashing knife. The majority of people who are not "knife oriented" will see the gaping wound and blood loss from a flesh wound and will flee.

The upside to this is when you end up in court for the trial, your lawyer will be able to justify the fact that you weren't trying to have a lethal defense, only an effective one that will startle and scare off your attacker.

Another upside is that the knife is Great for getting through clothing, catches, and works well in concert with joint manipulation. But be mindful of arterial content when used against the insides of joints.

Any use of a knife that causes purposeful harm to another person is considered application of lethal force.

I can already see the prosecution having a field day with this.

But hey, its better to be judged by 12 then carried by 6

I'd rather have the matriach in a fight for sure its, its gruesome blade.

Problem is it would never get used.
