A few months ago, I bought my father in law a Kershaw Leek for his BD thinking that it would get him out of the sorry S&W knives he had been carrying. Last week, the wife and kids went to Disneyland with her parents. They dropped him off at the gate to get the tickets while they parked. When he tried to enter the park, they said he couldn't take the knife in. Sooo, instead of taking the tram back to the parking structure, he threw the knife AWAY :grumpy:

To top it off, the year before, I gave him a $60 musashi 1045 katana. Two weeks later, my MIL reports that he had been swinging it around in their bedroom and had accidentally hit the bedpost. Mind you that it went through both of their winter coats on the way to solid wood.

Told the wife that I would never buy him anything sharp again...

Sounds like you should've given him some Imperial pocket knives. Cheap, sharp, and real beaters. Some people just don't appreciate knives the same way we do.

That is about the most absurd thing to do.
I would rip my ass off if I would be you.

That's obnoxious. But you probably should have learned something from the katana incident- some people, for whatever reason, are just not fit for certain types of gifts. (Note that I was nice and didn't say your FIL was a retard.)

I'll bet you buy drum sets for your nieces and nephews, too. :p

He could have at least tried to walk off out of sight and hide it someplace, if he was too ornery to bother to go back to the car.

to some people a knife is all the same much how I would see a butterknife. And yes, id throw a butterknife out rather than bring it inside.

You can say a lot of things about the guy, but remember, he was using your knife. That says a lot to me. Most people would just throw it in a drawer which is no different.

IMO you guys are being too materialistic. A knife is just a tool. He saw it as such and thought it to be replaceable. Not everyone is super sentimental with gifts (and no offense especially parents in law).

Just my two cents...

Makes me wonder how many treasures sit in trash cans at theme park entrances.

It is different for it to be in a drawer, at least there somebody someday may use it. Thrown away nobody ever will.
If he felt it wasn't worth the trouble to try to keep, he could have at least gave it away to somebody leaving.

News to me - they actually check for knives at Disney? IIRC I carried a BM mini-grip or similar model (can't remember) into Disney YEARS ago.

I think you need to buy him a 9 mm pistol next time, and see what he does with it. Remember to bring a camera.

Years ago my brother wore a small fixed blade knife into the Louisville zoo. (he'd just got it a day or so before and was too proud of it to take it off)Nobody said a word, besides when he rode an elephant and the handler said you aren't gonna stab my elephant with that now are you? (he was about 12) I bet today they'd be on him like stink on you know what!

I always carry a folder with me no matter where I go, the trick is just don't let them know you have it. ;)
