On several threads lately, I have started to answer a question, only to see that the person asking has no profile info. I often just clicked over to the next thread and don't answer. Why? Not because I am a profile snob....It is partly because without some basic info it is harder to make a complete answer, and the other part is that if a person wants some advise from those who have done the work and research, they should at least show the effort to present themselves properly. Too many new chaps show up here and ask the same old questions and/or start a project with no plan or direction.
Knifemaking and brain surgery are not a learn as you go thing. You need to learn the basic principals first, make a plan on how you will build your knife ,including the heat treatment , and then if things pop up ,or you don't understand some of the info you have read......ask for advise.
The standard comments/questions seem to run like these:
I finished drawing the shape on my steel...How do you guys cut it out and make it hard?
I finished shaping and sharpening my knife, but it won't stay sharp. Is there another step i don't know about that makes it hard?
I Finished the knife I am making from 440C, But my oven only goes to 500F?Can I HT it in my kitchen oven? If not, what do you guys use?
I am ready to HT my knife....what do I need to do?
I am making my first knife in 1095 because it is easy to HT.
evything i read says to do "X-Y-Z". that sems like a lot of wrk. i don't think i ned Y and probly can skip most fo X and Z. WDYT? BTW, this 18" zombie killer is my first knife.
95% of these ( probably 99%) can be answered by reading the stickies or doing a simple search. If you can't get the search to work well, use this search engine:
http://www.google.com/cse/home?cx=011197018607028182644:qfobr3dlcra
Try wording the search parameters a few different ways, if you don't find what you are looking for.
As I have advised many times, reading online and reading a book are two entirely different things. You will retain info from printed material much longer and absorb it better. Get a couple knife making books and read them cover to cover a few times and you will be amazed at how few of these questions will need to be asked. Don't forget to check the public library. You know, that brick building that they keep books in? If you don't know about libraries, ask an older person. I know many libraries that have knife making books which are not available new any more, and cost hundreds of dollars used....all sitting there read for you to borrow and read for free.
Final rants -
No you can't make a good knife from a lawn mower blade!
No, you can't do a good HT in a camp fire ( Sorry, Rambo)!
No, We have no idea what the piece of steel you found in the dumpster is!
No, you can't just heat it red and stick it in old motor oil and get a perfect HT.
