It's that time of year again. The time of year I always manage to put on extra weight. Luckily, it's not from all the turkey and pumpkin pie. In the winter my belt and pockets just seem to amass...stuff:confused: I think it has to do with the fact that in the spring and summer, I'm super busy. I need to keep it lightweight. I'm on my feet all day, in and out of the truck, talking to customers, etc. In the warmer months, I'll usually keep nothing but a titanium folder in my front pocket and a Beretta Pico in my back pocket. Maybe a little over a pound in total.

In the late fall and winter....I sit. My clothes go from a tucked in polo and jeans or cargo shorts to a random tee shirt with a flannel or oversize hoodie thrown over and jeans. I don't get so concerned about being light and fast, and I can conceal a larger handgun (even if my day to day interaction with people dries up to next to nothing;)). I also get caught up in internet hoopla about bullets not penetrating thick coats. Maybe my .380 or 9mm snubbie won't do the trick. Perhaps the roving gangs of methed out psychopaths are armored in kevlar impregnated parkas! It's utterly silly, but the mind wanders to weird places when one has time on their hands.

Soooo, I catch myself just grabbing a bit of this and that "just 'cuz" and stuffing it into my pockets. Today was especially bad. I stepped out of my truck and immediately felt the extra weight shift.

So I thought I would start another thread and see what else everyone else is carrying. Do you rotate your EDC, add to it, subtract from it, etc depending on the time of year? Here's a little break down of what I am carrying and why. Expect many redundancies as logical thought was about the only thing I didn't shoehorn into this load out:D

20161129_084955.jpg

Here it is top and clockwise:

  • Armscor Citadel 1911 I picked up a few months ago. I generally upgrade to a polymer 9/40 in the winter months from my little .380 semi/9mm revolver. Most days a Glock 19 rides along because it's lightweight and pretty much impervious to the elements. However, it just kinda FELT like a chunky steel Tuesday. She's wearing my favorite grips gifted to me by one of our kindly forum friends. Many of you will most likes recognize his handy-work;) The 1911 is riding on my hip in a kydex holster.

  • A simple Case Mini Trapper. My wife and daughter got this for me for father's day (or was it my birthday?) a couple of years ago. My wife picked out the pattern, my daughter picked out the color. Red, is not my favorite color. Green is. However, I'm always the "red guy" when we play Candyland (since my wife always gets to be Green since it is her favorite color too). So I pack the little trapper along to think about my "girls". As you can see, it gets a lot of use. Oddly enough, it is my 1# pick for making lemon twists for cocktails. That Case carbon steel gets mighty thin and sharp for getting the lemon skin down to wafer thin. I usually keep my small slip joints in my fifth/watch pocket of my jeans.

  • Geber Money Clip/box cutter. I don't carry cash often, but when I do, I pack it along in this little knife I found at a hardware store on closeout. I open a few boxes at work, and I generally use my folder. However if I am going to be opening and breaking down a ton of them, I opt for the box cutter on this Gerber. I can scrape and slice and generally abuse it all I want. I just replace the blade when it gets too dull and it saves me from buggering up my nicer knives on abrasive cardboard. As you can see, leg-sweat does a number on the cheap replaceable blade. You can also see I opted to go with a blunt tip blade over the more common sharper tip. It's never opened in my pocket, but Murphy's Law has bitten me (literally) enough to hedge my bets. This setup rides deep in my rigth pocket. I don't need my cash in a hurry, so it's way down there so I don't lose/spend it;)

  • Zero Tolerance 909. I like big folders, and I cannot lie. I have several ZTs. I love them all, but for some reason the 909 just seems to balance what I require in my knife better than some of the others when it comes to using it at work. I also keep a 350 with a partially serrated edge as a true hard use work knife and a sleek little 450 for my day to day carry. My clipped flippers always ride in my right pocket, tip up with the blade nested against my pocket seam for safety...Murphy's Law.

  • 8 round 1911 reload. *See comment about Murphy's Law above. I do prefer the flush fit of the 7 rounders for carry in the gun though.

  • My tank-like baby AK. I made this left pocket sheath for it, and it's about as close as I have found for an EDC khuk that still behaves like a khuk. I've lost count of the stuff I have sliced, chopped, lopped, poked, and pried with this little brute. I carry butt out for a kind of cross draw with my right hand from my left front pocket. It works pretty well and even rests nicely in my pocket when I sit down as the longish handle tucks back towards my hip as the knife finds a diagonal spot to lay across my thigh.. One of my favorite carry knives, believe it or not. It is more comfortable to carry this large knife this way than it is to have a folder or multitool in my pocket. Go figure.

  • My Leatherman MUT. I usually carry either a lighter Rebar or even a Wingman for day to day work. Sometimes a big SuperTool 300, but I just like my MUT. It's nice because it is pretty much bombproof, can be thumbed open one handed, and I have it set up with the bits I need for both work and shooting at the range (the MUT is designed for firearm maintenance first and foremost). I usually tuck this next to the AK in my left pocket. One of the nice things about the MUT is that it has a pocket clip. However, it is a super chunky tool clocking in heavier than most. That said, it's certainly heavy duty and robust:)
.

There you have it: 7 items in my pockets omitting my wallet (which I forgot to take out) and my phone (which I used to take the picture:p) I think this might be a little excessive.

I haven't weighed all this stuff, but I bet it clocks in at 4lbs give or take:o

This is an old picture, I substituted the little no name fixed blade for the IBBB of course. Everything else is pretty much the same, I have been trying an inside the waist band Garrett holster for the 1911.
I use this every day of the year. Sometimes if I'm feeling secure at home I'll leave off the 1911 but the ankle gun stays.

Usually its this Dan Wesson Cbob 45 but occasionally other 1911's substitute. The ankle gun is a Kahr PM45 which also accepts 1911 magazines.

I was wearing this set up all the time in Reno and I'm willing to gamble that Bookie never noticed it.

Being in a wheelchair has some advantages to in having a front little bag and a back bag that can accommodate all sorts of stuff. Leatherman rides in a sheath mounted to the frame. A Surefire flashlight mounted opposite on the frame.
Extra batteries, small folders, etc in the bags.
Seems silly to get a titanium light weight chair and then load it down with me and gear but treat everyday like you live in Chicago and you get along fine.

Hey, I don't fault using the chair for storage at all. If I were using one, I would have all kinds of goodies and bug out stuff stashed everywhere. Heck, I'd be tempted to keep a 45-70 in a saddle holster by my legs:D

I have a Mares Leg in 45 Colt that fits well by the legs.

Another plus is when getting checked to go into events these days where they look in purses and bags they usually but not always ignore me. Like I'm not a threat.

Ironically when in Reno going to the Rodeo, the 2nd reason we go, 1st is to visit Auntie of course, they check bags.

9 times in now I think and one time they wanted to check me. They got concerned about the Leatherman which I had taken out of it's frame sheath and put in the bag.
I told them every person wearing jeans (lots) has a clip folding knife in their pocket and your gonna call security on a stupid leatherman???? I ended up having to badge my way out.

Fortunately they didn't pat me down or I'd probably still be in Reno. Course maybe auntie would come and visit me if that were the case.

Working an unusually late night tonight, going on 13 hours now, gonna be around 14 when I'm out, so all I could snap was a kinda crappy pic. Having said that, I learned that I can in fact fit my entire EDC loadout onto one hand/forearm.

Seeing as Steely set the trend, I suppose I'll list off my kit.

- IBBB/Mini Micro Bowie with my custom kydex sheath. This rides with me all the time, mostly because I love it and the amazing checkering job by Bawanna.

- Emerson Scalawag. My newest Emerson, part of the latest signature series. Each one is numbered and engraved by Ernie Emerson, mine is #115/120. I used to carry my Emerson CQC-7AW with a zero grind and acid etch, but this baby booted it from my pocket as soon as I took it out of the box. The detent is super strong, action smooth as glass, and it just feels and looks right.

- Fenix PD35 flashlight, for making things brighter :) this guy also rides in a custom kydex rig. Clicks into place, and can even be shaken vigorously while it's upside down.

Pen - I'm in offices most of the day, and it's pretty easy to find scrap paper or a print station. Having a pen in key though.

Bic lighter - just in case I need to start a fire, fuse some paracord, or help a pretty girl light something ;)

Wallet - for carrying my plastic money, some emergency cash, and a whole bunch of business cards from important people.

Car keys & lanyard - helps with driving, plus a length of paracord, fire starter, snake bead (for looking cool), and more keys than I know what to do with.

Tissues - cuz my nose runs like crazy at this time of year. These last longer than you'd think; I only use them when I can't swindle a tissue from someone's desk as I walk by

Seems like more sometimes, but that's it! Minus the phone of course. I'll post a better pic of everything once I get home :)

I'm interested in the emergency cash. Where do you get that and how long are you able to keep it before it goes away even if there isn't an emergency?

HA! I wish it were magic, but comes from my other cash that I usually keep at home. Couple hundred max, in case I'm ever in a pinch with rent or something. Try to keep $20-40 in the wallet, but that doesn't mean it lasts long. See "emergency" can be interpreted all sorts of ways. From "lost in a foreign place" to "need to buy something but have no money in the bank and the credit card is tapped and it's still another week til payday." Quite the spectrum you see. And sometimes that at-home cash is used for such emergencies as "need to buy a synth that's on sale but don't get payed til next week."

In case you didn't see the common theme, it's the cursed bi-weekly pay haha

Also, I took a better picture for y'all and for instagram of course :)

SG, you're wicked for a young guy. I'm more of an old guy and treacherous at this point in life. Kudos to you.

I'm a member of the plastic/electronic generation. I generally only keep enough cash on me to budget lunch/snacks through the week, maybe 20-30 bucks. I don't write checks unless it's to Yangdu or an FOP donation. It really is more convenient for me to know that I have roughly XX dollars in the bank and use my card then reconcile it online later in the day. I'm poor, but I have very cheap tastes, so getting overdrawn isn't a big concern.

Today I paired down all my clutter...a little bit.

20161130_085456 (1).jpg

I swapped out the AK for a IBBB that rides in my back pocket. That freed up my left pocket to carry a nice GEC Missouri Trader locking slip joint that was graciously gifted to me by a forum friend (my first REALLY nice slippie). I've got a ZT 0452 in my right pocket, long in blade but super lightweight:). Finally, I figured it might as well be wheelgun Wednesday. I opted for an SP101 in .327 fed mag backed up with a dump pouch of hard cast .32 S&W and a load out of wadcutters.

My overall weigh savings has to be close to half of yesterdays. No heavy multi-tool, a gun weighing maybe 10oz less than the 1911 (not to mention the ammo weight), the ZT weighs half as much as 909 (and actually gains a bit of length), and the slippie being a single blade with man made scales over bone actually comes in a lighter than the mini trapper (I think).

Partial pocket dump-flashlight, wallet and wee sharpening kit are still inna pockets, in the other room.

I am digging your Skeletool there, JW. I need to dig mine out. I don't carry it often because is one of the first run CX models with the stupid combo edge. I don't mind serrations, but I don't like them on premium steel.

However, it got me hooked on clipped tools. Obviously the MUT decided that lightweight was to take a backseat;)

I actually went super "light" today. I switched out my jeans so I only grabbed the ZT630 as my pocket knife of choice. Generally speaking, I walk my daughter to school then walk back and get my firearm from home. However, today I was running late, so I didn't have time to go grab anything. I did have a nice 12" Ang Khola in the truck, so its better than nothin';)

Steely Gunz, I always liked and followed your thoughts and way of thinking here at BF and the Cantina. We are very similar minded in lots of things.
To be honest, I also load up excessively during Winter time, mainly because I love gear and tools and having so many pockets available in jackets, coats and long pants just calls for it.
My typical summer EDC will be something like this:

CAM04217_zpstjrjceh1.jpg

While my Winter carry is usually much more complete, heavy and redundant. Most see this as exaggerated (I admit most of the things do not see use every day, or every week, but they give peace of mind and are sure welcome when you do really need them)

I know we don't know each other, but I must say I am a fan of yours and want to thank you for many great comments and inspiring posts over the years.
Have a nice day you all!

How very, very kind, Peacent:o Thank you.

I love that load out in the bottom pic. My summertime carry adds an old Tasman Salt, and I keep a SOG tool in my tool bag at work. Love the replaceable tools:)

I actually made it an entire week in Disneyland "armed" with nothing more than a Leatherman Piranha. Criminally underrated tool.

1. IBBB in it's custom kydex sheath by SG
2. Cold Steel Counter Tac II
3. Dodge Caravan Key with library card, SOG mini key knife, Swiss utili key, Swiss multi tool
3. Daughter's token for a free smiley pancake from Millbrae Pancake House. She earned it by getting her freestyle swimming proficiency ribbon from La Petite Baleen Swimming School
4. Spyderco Delica ZDP full flat grind
5. Nissan Murano and Honda Accord keys
6. Wallet with my spare cash, credit cards, etc...
7. Secondary wallet with Gift Cards, Business Credit Cards, and emergency cash
8. Belt holster for Samsung S7 (using phone to take this pic)
9. My "To Do List", doubles as a scratch paper for notes, etc...
10. My favorite Uniball Gel Impact 207 pen
11. CRKT TAO Tactical Pen with space ink refill

More crap in my jacket, but it's in the car.

I also have a Walther PPK strapped to my ankle, I'm at work, so I can't exactly pull it out.

Dang dude, looks like a lot of bills in that wallet, your wife and daughter know you got all that money?

In these parts we call that a wad!

I only just refound the dang skeletool...I want to say this is my third one? The clips don't work well for me-I always end up finding it down between the truck seats.
I've been thinkin' about taking the blade out and replacing it with a spare truck key

Mr. B, around these parts it's called being old fashioned, and it's chump change around the Bay Area, and especially in Silicon Valley, considering how much everything costs. The milleniels around here just carry their smartphones, ID, and credit cards, I know some people that haven't handled cash in years. I on the other hand, carry good ole dependable cash, unfortunately, a few K's don't go very far, so credit cards a must have. Since guns are a no, no, in CA, I carry more than my fair share of blades on my person, and of course, my little illegal ankle protector is always with me, except for when I need to go through a security checkpoint at an amusement park, airport, government building, etc...

I haven't handled much cash in years either, and I'm old fashioned. I don't really know how to use my debit card, too much technology. I need to find me a big stash of that cash. Would work good for me.
Actually just send it to auntie, save time and be convenient. Yup EMS on that, how much left now?????

Perfect world.

Well here is from last year first. Musta been a weekend? No keys in my pocket and I was obviously working on making a flint knapping tool.
