Finally bit the bullet on a 102 woodsman

It was me and I also remember saying " it feels weird to say " in my comment, it probably felt weird to say because I know that I can't really say whether another purchase is truly off the table since many purchases were on impulse.

I don't think my knife purchases out nor do I have specific wants or needs...ect I just see something I want and put it on my "short list ", it depends entirely on my mood when it's number comes up. :D
I don't say anything...anymore. I'm like you, in that, if I see something and it pleases me I'll buy it. Of course, it has to be affordable. There are quite a few knives that I'd like to own but just can't make myself spend the money...yet!

Probably should start doing the same.
If it's affordable and I want it, there's a very good chance I'll impulsively buy it.

You will enjoy the Buck 102, it is a great bird and trout knife - I use mine mostly for waterfowl and a 121 for SW fish, don’t clean many FW fish. New style in the top picture, Pre-86 in lower picture. Never noticed the upward angle of the new 102 blades until I started reading this thread. In my haste to take this picture last year when I got the red handled Buck 102 I grabbed the first rod & reel I had available - that’s a surf rig, it’s surely not a trout rig! OH

For me I mapped out a plan to have 1 each of the 100 series in Black Phenolic. Figured I’d end up with them eventually anyway.

Once you have the full set you’ll be able to pick which one you like best for the task at hand.

The fisherman and the caper are the only tough ones to find but readily available used. The other 7 from C&C add up to around $450. $10 a week that’s not even a year. 15 more weeks you can add the 124 general.

While I'm not against it, I've yet to ever go hunting and when I do on the rare occasion have the chance to get out and go fishing I usually don't catch anything worth keeping.
I love to fish , would like to be able to call myself anything more than a backyard pest taker, and would love to be able to actually use one of the B&T's I currently have or will likely acquire in the future for their Intended purpose.
Its probably not in the cards for the near future so for now I'll just stick to using them to open things I buy and breaking down boxes at work.

I can relate. Food prep and boxes are all I do with mine too. I always enjoy OldHunters game processing photos

any have both? a straight and angled upwards......pic side by side.......? thanks much

I do........not a lot of difference, but the upward angle is there.

Like I said, I think somebody felt that angle would offer more use of the cutting edge without interference from the guard.

What strikes me more about this picture is the vast difference in style, form, beauty, workmanship and integrity.

One knife has it all.......the "improved" version looks like it came out of a machine that stamps out millions of cheap copies.

Can't fight progress..............I guess.

great pic and examples to show it. thank you Sir.

The earlier one definitely looks better, the angle free blade and the handle looks a little more proportional and less bulbous.

The current one still looks like a great knife and if I can forget about this picture I should be able to get past the weird angle and enjoy it, this comparative picture sure shows it.

Oh yeah.......don't get me wrong, the new ones are great knives, too, and they have some advantages.

That "angle" is not apparent unless you are really looking for it.

The 440C with that old blade geometry was hard to sharpen.

It's just that the old ones have the look.

You can find them on e-Bay.

:D

If you find an old one on the Bay you can send it in for a Spa Treatment that will include changing the edge geometry with the sharpening.

You have to communicate what you need to the Spa elves. They can do magic.

I tell my wife that all of the time...Then the next thing you know she comes in from the mailbox with boxes of knives...I ask her what she ordered?? It's not a pretty sight...(Just kidding) I get the mail and leave them in the garage until she goes to work or the store, then I open them up...:D:D:D:D:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
