finally cut myself :(

Hypothetically speaking, had I nicked the ulnar artery, there would have been blood spewing, correct? Also, I would have felt pain moving my fingers, yes?

I just want to make sure I didn't sever anything. The docs didn't say I did, and I assumed I didn't because I had full motor control of my hand.

hark, hows come you did'nt go to Grady ???

Too far and too long a wait period. They're always packed because it's free. Also, I didn't expect it to be 150 for stitches (even though people say that's cheap).

It would have been squirting a bit. You probably would have quite a bit of pain moving your hand if you hit anything else. That said, never trust ER doctors they couldn't even manage bandaging my thumb when I whacked it with the hatchet, I had to redo it myself a couple of hours later. Keep an eye on it, if you don't have any problems by the time the stitches come out, you probably won't.

Sounds good. The pain is a nuisance at best. It feels more like a bad paper cut than anything else.

It's reading things like this that make me glad I live in Canada.

Last summer i crashed my bike. I had a jagged inch long scar in the side of my face. I got it stitched up at the hospital, free.

It is cheap. You probably could have got the antibiotic cheaper, though. Nicking an artery wouldn't necessarily cause pain when moving the fingers (a nerve might have been a different story), but it would have bled more and had more of a spurting, pulsatile characteristic.

Edit: Realized what I had to say might be too political.

Hope you feel better soon Harkamus.:)

Not at all. I used to live in Germany (was born there). They have some of the cheapest healthcare in the world. Hell, braces are free over there, as are dental visits and optometrist visits.

I sliced opened the meaty part of my hand between the thumb and the index finger when my caly 3 somehow opened itself in my pocket, i was reaching in to get my keys and i felt something funny, i took my hand out and there is lots of blood coming out, the look on my 15 year old son's face was priceless, i wrapped some napkins around it ( we had just gone out for lunch) and drove to the emergency room (also in San Francisco), luckily no tendon or artery damage, 7 stitches cost me $490 after insurance, the total bill was over $1000, when i saw the list of charges i was stunned, every little thing was stupid expensive, it makes me wonder about our medical system in the US. now my hand is mostly fine, but a bit numb in certain spots and tingly, i am sure a bunch of nerves got sliced!! good luck in your recovery harkamus!

Wow, the more I hear about other people's expenses here, the more fortunate I feel.

It looks to be healing fine. I follow my discharge papers to the tooth, cleaning the area over the stitching and changing the dressings daily. I get the sutures removed this upcoming Friday.

Here's some more then. The idiot...I mean, doctor, at the emergency room when I chopped my thumb got a piece of foam bandage stuck in the wound, here's a picture with it still in there:

So I had to go to the doctor to see if he could get it out of there. I waited for almost an hour, doctor came in, said " looks good, soak it warm water and that should come out of there," and then sent me off. Got a bill for it, $85 .

Yeah, I cut myself too. I was showing a buddy how secure a kydex sheath was. (He still jumps out of planes and keeps us all safe for a living). The knife was not inserted the whole way and came out of the sheath point up, hit my coffee table and inserted itself in my downward thrusting palm. It hurt real bad. I wasn't about to let my buddy know how bad I was hurt from a stupid mistake. I bled a whole lot. The fish oil I take as a supplement almost killed me! I cut into the medial nerve and still am working on fine motor skills in that hand. I was refused to go to the hospital . I know it would have taken at least a dozen stitches to close the wound. I chose an army trauma bandage followed by super glue to close the wound and the graduated to lots of liquid bandage. Those of you who talk about combative knife training need to know. Getting cut hurts real bad, bleeds a lot and takes a while to heal. A stupid mistake yes ,but a new found respect of the damage a blade can inflict

ouch. well, lesson learnt I hope?

Okay, I edited myself above, but I gotta comment on this. There's no such thing as free health care. You pay for it through your taxes and/or through the quality and availability of services. I'm glad our foreign friends like their Nationalized Health Care systems, but I want no part of them.

What do you mean? He sewed it onto your thumb?

There was nothing left to sew, it had to heal on its own, be broke a piece of that hard non stick foam and, instead of getting another he just stuck that one right in there, and when the blood dried, the foam dried to it.

You think the ER doc is a dumbass because your bandage stuck to your thumb? :jerkit:

No he is because he didn't bandage it right and I had to redo it that day and because he stuck a piece of broken foam, that is only nonstick on the outside, into my thumb, which was missing a rather large chunk.
