I couldn't find the old hiking staff threads, they must be buried deep, so I'll start another one.

Anyways, I found this stick in the dumpster when I was taking out the trash and thought it was the perfect size for a hiking stick. Well after cutting off the cracked ends, it was the perfect size... for my wife!

Anyways, I stripped the bark, sanded and finished with about 5 coats of my homemade finish which is a mixture of Pine sap/resin, Boiled linseed oil, and turpentine. I epoxied and pinned a copper pipe end to the bottom and wrapped the hand area with green 550 paracord with a lanyard loop. For those interested, I have no idea what kind of wood it is, it seems pretty tough though, when I first got it I banged it around, put my whole body weight on it, etc. It had some worms/grubs in it though, so I had to drown it in my grandpa's pool, don't tell him.

Very nice. On my stick, I'll be putting three bicycle spokes under the cordwrap. They'll make the handle a bit more like an oval which should be more comfortable to use. In a survival situation they could be used to make a fish/frog spear or something as well.

Thanks for the compliments guys.

CanDo: Great idea, but I don't understand how they would make it more oval? Maybe I just can't picture it, because the stick I used is already somewhat oval. I like the idea of the use as a spear.

On that note, I was just thinking today, I know how some people put a compass on the top, but what if you drilled out the top and epoxied in a large spy capsual so the cap is flush or nearly flush with the wood on top. Then you can put some things like a whistle, firesteel, bandaids, etc. in it, without being an eyesore...

Stingray,

Good thought on the spy capsule. To elaborate on my idea:

I'd bunch up three or more spokes in a row or even two rows on one side of stick so that they are all very close together. The cord wrap will then smooth out this 'bump' on one side of the staff making one side of the staff (palm side) circular, and the other (fingers) elliptical.

Hey stingray,
What I've started doing for threads that will have ongoing posts or threads that I want to refer back to, is to copy the URL (?) in a Word Document and hyperlink it, so when I want it, it's handy.

that came out great... you folks need to come and test it out overe here in my neck of the woods...:D

Talfuchre: Ya, it is a cap for a copper pipe. Just bring your stick into the hardware store with you and head to the plumbing section. Look in the area with the copper pipe fittings: angles, caps, couplings, etc. There are different sizes like 3/4", 1/2", etc. so bring your stick to find the right one.

MtnFolk Mike: Sounds good, what are you doing the weekend after next? Shoot me an email.

Doc Canada: Good idea thanks for the tip.

That looks fantastic! Great work!
