Well I finally finished it...The pictures are not the best but I couldnt wait to show it off.Tomorrow I will spend the day taking pictures untill I get it figured out and get some good pictures taken...to get the shine off the blade so you could see the damascus I had to nock the sun off and darken the handle.

Next can you guess what kind of grind I did on this blade? I will give the answer later after a few guesses..

Any and all comments welcome, thanks for looking,
Bruce

Neat, Bruce. Belongs in the sash of a gent on a riverboat. Is that an "Alex Daniels platen"-style grind?

Ground on a 6foot wheel!
or
Platen that is curved:p
Bruce try using a piece of black paper to reflect on the blade that will make the Damascus show better.
take care
Bob

First guess got it.and the second...Yep it is a hollow grind on a platen with the radious of a 6 foot grinding wheel...It is so close to flate it isnt funny. But it is the true grind for the 1800's style English Bowies..I like it and it is different...Think I will just grind everything with it from now on unless asked for something different.

Bruce

You notice any significant change in the belt drag with that curved platen versus the regular one, Bruce?

I didnt notice any drag Fitzo...

Thanks Ray...

Well what is the verdict on the Damascus being shiny?Good-Bad or should I resist the handle and etch the blade and guard?

I like it this way myself.

Yep the Bruce we know and love is making top drawer knives again! Congrats my friend!
I like that grind. I can see it is hollow but only after you said it was. That grind can work for any blade.
The shiny damascus looks cool.

I agree with Bruce, i did not know it was hollow ground until you mentioned it. A very interesting idea a platen with the radius on it! I also like the shiny damascus, very subtle. It's like yeah it's damascus but you are not slapped in the face with it.

Thanks for the kind words guys..

Sam,That is kind of what I wanted,a blade that you didnt know was Damascus and then it just peeked up at you when you got close enough to it.Just wanting to try something different.

Bruce

Thanks Sandy Glad you like it.

Danbo,I know you prefer dark etches.I just liked the shiny blade better for this knife after I got it close to finish. The pattern is their it just isnt jumping out at you like most Damascus, which is what I was trying for.I wanted the knife itself to stand out on it's own and then let it be a suprise that it is a Damascus blade...Thanks for the great comment.

Looking very good Bruce. At first glance I didn't like the shorter blade, but after a couple more looks I think it looks great with that blade width/length. Also I think your right, a more sutle damasc looks better with that handle set-up. I generaly like high contrast damascus, but that would have made the knife too "buisy" I think.

It's good to see you turning out work like that again. Did you forge the damascus with charcoal?

It's also good to see a nice wood on a high end knife also.

forgot to ask, how thick was the platten material you made the 6' radiouse from? I've been thinking of making one from a thick(3/8") truck spring.

Thanks Will,Yes I used Charcoal...You hit it on the head about the being to busy with a high contrast Damascus in my eyes also..

Not sure how thick the platen is,a friend of mine that worked in a machine shop made it for me a long time ago and I am just now getting the guts to try it,and now I like it.
