Went to the woods yesterday with my daughter and 6 yr old nephew and they wanted me to build them a lean to and start a fire using the bow and drill method. All I had on me was a Machete and Rat3 knife. The Machete worked really well for chopping but when it came to the bow and drill I really needed my SAK with saw. I just didnt know how useful it was until I didnt have it. I could have really used that thing making my fire bored. From now on Ill keep a SAK and a Machete for the woods. Lesson learned.

right on.. they are plenty useful indeed... i never go into the woods without SAK camper or modded farmer... i also have a OHT that see's a lot of woods/camping use..

I always liked a SAK in the woods, the more blades the better. Now I prefer the big OHT, which I added a microlight to for extra utility. The longer handle helps in a hard-working grip and the saw is also longer. Most of the other blades I now leave at home are minimally useful on a hike anyway.

I really would like to try out the PE-OHT, don't know why I haven't. The only limitation to that model is the size, too big for a pocket and I don't know if I'd keep it in a belt sheath.

I just pick up a PE OHT with dayglow scales,I have a black OHT PE but the I could not pass on this one.....dayglow has cork screw and black scale version has phillips head...99% of the time I have my SAK "Hiker" on me..I just gotta have a SAK on my or I feel Nekkid ! LOL

I gave away a Trekker for the reason Spooky mentions. It seemed like it was as bulky as my Wave, but it didn't have a pocket clip to help out.

That being said, I'm afraid that a Dayglo PE is calling my name, and my hearing seems to keep getting better. :D I really like the locking blade, longer saw, etc.

I've become a really big fan of the OH Trekker. One kit still has a Farmer as a second pocket knife but the locking blades and slightly larger and more ergonomic grip on the OHT makes it the better knife IMO. Plus, the serrations are on the front of the blade where they belong on a combo edge.

BTW, I keep them in the pack instead of a sheath or pocket. Easy enough to get to when needed.

I never leave home with out my Farmer! The saw on the SAK is a great tool!

very reason the hiker is on my person and the OHT is a Belt sheath knife,To big/bulky to ride in the pocket,no matter what pocket you stuff that big boy in,you'll feel it !

oht for me too, carry one daily, has been very usefull. the saw performs well beyond any tool of this size.

And blade is great too. With scrap piece of sandpaper around you will be able to make 13653 cuts thru 1/2 inch manila rope.

SAKs rule. Huntsman is my EDC. You can harvest firewood with the saw and a small hatchet. The saw is great for stop cuts. The saw back is a great fire steel striker. The large blade I use in the office as a letter opener as well as in the kitchen (when my long suffering wife gives me one of those withering looks, I ask her if she would prefer me to practice with my hatchet). The can opener is a great box opener. The small blade I think would make a good skinner, haven't tried it yet. The corkscrew helps me get PJ cotton out of the match case that it is stuffed into. The tweezers helps me fuzz out the cotton balls. The bottle opener is a great mini pry bar for paint and stain cans. The scissors is a great nail trimmer. The awl is a great pipe reamer.

The mystery hook is a topic unto itself. Lace tightener, pot bail lifter, emergency gutting hook (I have not tried that yet), maybe a pipe reamer (have not tried that yet either), package carrier, tent stake lifter, cordage tightener, knot untier and general sky hook applications.

The Victorinox SAK has been one of the greatest tools for outdoorsmen (and indoorsmen :D) for a very long time.

I never leave home without some incantation of the SAK---usually a Hiker, Farmer, or my personal favorite, the Alox-handled Pioneer Harvester.

Endlessly functional tools, and they come with a great blade.

I totally agree with the need for the SAK. For many years in construction and farm work, I have carried the Vic Explorer. It's true, this one has no saw but I have done a lot of serious wood working with the Explorer and it saved me a thousand trips to the tool box. I now also carry one of the versions with the saw if I am woods bound. I carry the explorer in a single magazine pouch with a belt clip that will clip anywhere.

Can't agree more about a SAK in the woods.

I carried a ranger for a long time, but recently went with the Champ ( Ithink that's the model - it has the saw and the scaler etc) primary reason I got it so I could have the magnifying lens & the phillips JIC.

There is really nothing about the SAKs I don't like - hold a killer edge, and so far have never had one with blade play- and I'm pretty rough with them.

Their saws are the bomb - it can make some tinder in no time flat, and are great for quick notch cuts etc

I don't plan on not having one in my pocket for the for-seeable future.

I wear Cabela's hiking pants or shorts. They have a built in knife sheath that holds my OHT just right. I never even notice it.

I tuck the OHT in the back pocket of a pair of jeans and don't even notice it's there. The microlight makes a kind of lanyard to pull it out.

I can't agree more on the Bow Drill example. It cuts the spindles to length - the fireboard to lenth - it cuts the notch out - and then the blade does the rest. It is THE tool for the fireboard - small - and on you.

I have a pocket clip on my Farmer - on me all the time.

if I'm in the woods my Vic Fieldmaster is in one of my front pockets and tethered to a belt loop with para-cord as my emergency knife. I know if anything were ever to happen to me and my other knives I have on me that I have that SAK attached to me and that is a very reassuring feeling.

Thanks for that. I was wondering where the RAT 3 fell short. Seems folks like the SAK for the really fine work, which makes sense now.
