just found out my county issues CCW's with no problem if you pass the back ground check (normally county's in CA wont even issue them)

so now to decide what to carry ( good excuse for a new gun), what do you all carry? i'm looking at a glock 19 or 23 (little "blocky" for my tastes) or a sig 2022 which for the price of under 500$ with night sights looks hard to beat

btw i'm 6'5 with a Norwegian frame (atm overweight which i plan to work on, my dads a buff 290lbs with barely any fat), i could prolly CCW a 50BMG and not give it away.

Depending on your hand size, but i have had the glock 19 and now have the full size glock 22. Love glocks and with a comptac minotar holster it dissapears on me. Cant beat a glock (even for a lefty)

I carried all variety of pistols for many moons, from Glocks to 1911s to revolvers, Hi-Powers, CZ, you name it. Mostly carried inside the waistband. But after trying pocket carry a few years ago, I have never gone back to belt carry. Its just too easy and convenient to carry in the pocket, and you don't have to dress around the gun or shield the gun when someone hugs you or you bend over. You certainly give up something when going this route (capacity, grip size, barrel length), and thats a real consideration. But I have become so used to pocket carry that it feels like there is a toaster oven on my belt when I carry a Glock. I'm satisfied that 7 or 8 rounds of spicy 9mm in Kahr PM9 (depending on the mag) is adequate to alter someone's behavior, though I also carry sometimes a Ruger SP-101 357 mag, S&W 442 or Ruger LCP.

Just something to consider. When you first get your license, its so cool that you want to carry a big gun on the belt. I get it. But 10 years from now I would not be surprised if you were carrying something smaller. Especially if you carry all day, every day, everywhere its legal. JMO.

Chicks dig pocket carry.

I use a comptac ctac with either a full size 1911 or a g23. For pocket carry I went with a khar mk9.

the only thing with pocket carry, is capacity, i feel that 5 rounds of 357 might not be enough IF i ever have to draw in a multiplier attacker situation, all though due to state law max mag size is 10 rounds, i guess 2 speed loaders or a back up 357 would solve that problem.

also semi's are faster to reload than a revolver, so i would prefer a semi-auto, as far as size, i have huge hands so sub-compacts are hard for me to handle.

You are right that all factors favor belt or IWB carry for the reasons you've stated, except convenience and comfort. So like everything else we do in life, there is a cost/benefit analysis we go through. When you hit 50 and your back starts hurting :), and you live in a relatively safe part of the world, pocket carry starts looking sweeter.

I knew a very obese guy, and former cop, who used to carry a Glock 27 on his belt at the "noon" position, i.e., right under his giant belly. So each of us does what works.

thinking about using my maxpedition jumbo for CCW/EDC as i carry alot of stuff, if some one asks say i like to takes pics and this is how i carry my camera or its a laptop bag lol

people with backpacks and stuff is common place in my town.

A 1911 from a good name (S&W, Kimber, Sig, Ruger, Colt [now that they have a rebirth going for 1911s] or for the wealthy... Baer, Wilson, Brown)

And at the same time, or when a 1911 doesn't work, a discretely carried DB380 or other smaller (Kel-tec, Ruger LCP/LCR).

And, a scrapivoir ;)

I can't wait to try the new Rock River Arms 1911 with the polymer lower... sounds spot on, and i love their rifles.

I like 1911s, but they aren't for everyone.

For plastic guns, i'm gonna check out the new micro size 45s out there now... XD for example... might actually sell me on something other than a 1911.

I'm partial to 1911's... but for all day carry, they start to feel like a boat anchor after a while. The bobtail is a Dan Wesson with aluminum frame. The weight savings is definitely worth it... and bobtail really carries great. Very accurate and reliable.

Other than 1911's, I'm partial to the Kahr line of pistols. They are lightweight accurate and reliable. The PM9 is great for summer carry... but for a guy with big mitts you may want to look into the P45. It's slightly smaller in size and thinner than a Glock 19. Lighter too. Kahr makes great stuff.

As for revolvers, the smith 442 is with me a whole lot. It carries great...

I also like the Ruger SP101 in 357 mag. It disappears in a waistband.

The more you carry, the more you will gravitate toward lighter pistols or revolvers. Buy the best quality you can afford and shoot often.

The "compromise" is very true ... and how you decide what counts will vary ... priorities can be determined by skill and likely threat analysis ... plus what size of pistol you need to be comfortable with ... in your case a larger model seems to be logical due to large hands ... that then can alleviate issues like capacity because a larger pistol will have all you need ... so then the issue is what type of pistol ? Do you want S/A only with a safety ? Or a Glock trigger safety ? Or a DA/SA ? Or a DA only ?

A lot of people think a Glock trigger safety is the best way to go if this is for "real life" and you just want to be able to pull the pistol and pull the trigger ...

Others may have more time under their belt with a SA only and a safety ... often comp shooters or just an older generation of pre Glock training ... or those who can shoot well with the SA but not the Glock ...

The permutations are many ... "budget" also is critical ... not many can spring for a few grands worth of pistol ...

Looking at "threat level" and accuracy and recoil is important ...

Allowing for the recent tragedy in Colorado and more and more people going armed with Kevlar protection ... do you intend to develop skill levels to take fast head shots or rely on multiple centre mass shooting and hope for a "knock down" ?

Have you got access to specialised anti kevlar ammo ? Probably not ... so if it is centre mass shooting and hoping for a "knock down" with plenty of ammo to achieve this then Glocks are pretty much ideal for this. Their triggers are'nt great but easily up to centre mass hits.

If you wanted to be able to develop skill for a 25 ft head shot on a quick draw you might well appreciate a comp style SA pistol ... something you could do comps with to practise ... maybe consider a recoil reducer such as a compensator ... the pistol then starts being hard on the "budget" issue ...

On average most of the posters on here will probably say the same thing when you factor in all these things ... a Glock is pretty hard to beat on price and performance and reliability ...

Many will also say that you are likely to shoot best with a quality SA semi auto ... 1911/Hi Power/ CZ / Sig / etc ...

You ought to go to the range and hire as many as you can and find what works best for you ... we nearly always ALL agree on that

Above is true, but its all about what is comfortable in your hand (and on your waist)

Glocks are awesome, but when I practice it's faster and more natural for me to un holster and shoot with a 1911 type grip angle

This is a situation where you want to try and fire as many different models you can to see what works for you

if your of Norwegian decent (i'm Swedish) and hang with busse folks, you should always have a half rack of these.

but remember, don't take a beer bottle to a gun fight unless you're drunk.

I am a huge fan of the Sig 2022. Normally I would say it is a bit much to carry concealed, but as big a fella as you are, you probably could pull it off quite easily. $500 might be a bit steep to pay for one though. Around $400 would be pretty close to what I paid for one a few months back. Regardless of what you pick, good luck!

ok, well if you don't drink the money that you save will get you something with a big hole in it to match your larger frame.

my house gun is a kimber TLE/RL2 the reason i dont want to ccw it is, 1. its heavy! a empty mag in it makes it 39oz's and more like 48oz's with a loaded mag, 2. it was a gift (for my 16th b-day) and in this state you have to show proof that the gun is yours to CCW it there for i can not legally carry it, its legal to own it but i cant carry it sadly as i have 0 paper work on it.

so i like 1911's, but my budget caps at 500$ as the fee for a CCW here is 139$

i would also like to add that my parents and i are all getting CCW's (my mom and dad, possibly my brother) my dad wants a hammerless revolver b/c they dont jam which i an see why he likes that, i dont know what my mom will get, and i like semi-auto's, my brother has a XD 45 compact.

anyone can recommend a 1911 with alloy frame and night sights for 500$ ish?

I've only carried for about 11 or 12 years now so I know there are many here with more experience than I. However, I'll share my history of carry choices and a little explanation how I evolved...

First I researched the crap out of Glocks because I wanted unmatched reliability. I settled on a G26. I replaced the recoil rod with a Wolff and then added a Pearce grip extension. Carried it in a Sidearmor IWB rig. However, what I ended up with, especially with the extension, was a G19 with 5 less rounds. This was still during the 94-04 AWB mind you so even the G19 mags were only 10rds.

Second I moved up to a G19. Loved it, competed with it, carried it for years. At the time I also bought a really expensive 15rd. mag for carry. Now they are a fraction of the price. Sidearmor holster, Wolff guide rod/spring and extended slide stop.

Next I tried pocket carry.

I started with a S&W 649 with CTC Lasergrips. Killed my hand with .357mag loads. Plus it was pretty heavy. I traded that for a S&W 638. Same gun essentially but in .38spl and much lighter.

Next I wanted lighter weight so I waited...and I waited...and when KT finally got moving I tried a P3AT. Just the worst POS I ever have shot in the pistol category. Back to the factory 3 times then traded. This was one of the first 200 off the line mind you so they had inherent reliability issues. Better now I guess.

Next I pocketed the Beretta Tomcat. Still love that gun! I just wanted more power than a .32acp. But low recoil and balls on at 10-15yds.

Next it was back to a new IWB gun....the G20. STILL love that gun. A powerhouse! Plus plenty of rounds and Glock performance. SIdearmor, Wolff, extended slide stop, extended mag release.

For a new pocket gun I tried the G26 in an AHolster (spell it just like that if you look for the company). THE BEST POCKET HOLSTER....PERIOD!!! I tried the Desantis...both versions. They both sucked. People love them but I'm not one of them. The AHolster is amazing!!

I got a little tired of the bulk of the G26 so I went to an LCP which is my current pocket piece. I put a CTC Lasergrip on it and throw a spare mag w/ grip extension in my off side pocket and I'm good to go. Weight is a joke, conceals in any pocket, not snappy and really smooth to shoot, reliable....I TRIED to get this thing to jam several times...nope...wouldn't hiccup!

When I'm riding I throw my Galco Classic Lite shoulder rig on under my armor and my G19 rides in the holster with a spare 17rd. mag off side.

Around the house I'll carry my G17 with TLR-1 in a Safariland OWB. Another awesome holster!!!

My wife also carries a G19 in her purse and has a Sig SP2022 in her night stand. On my side of the bed there's enough goodies to take on a small army if need be.

Feel free to ask any questions on any guns I've mentioned or any you are thinking off. I have a bunch hanging on the wall included HK's, Sigs, Berettas, 1911's, Rugers, etc. If I can't help you I'll point you in the right direction of someone who can.

Good luck and stay safe!

BTW, how in hell's bathroom are you getting a carry permit in CA?? Might want to play the lottery while you're at it cause you're one luck SOB!!

in Del Norte county the sheriff is a member of the tea party and very very pro-gun and pro-CCW, if you have to live in this state this is where you want to be lol.

the sig 2022 is my first choice or a alloy framed 1911 like a taurus pt-1911, i like 1911's the only problem is cost i dont have alot of money atm but i could always save up or something, i'd like to keep it 600$ or less, then again i could always go used as well.
