finally getting my CCW!!

forget the handguns...............get an assault rifle while you still can...they are much more effective for home invasions against multiple attackers and bad guys that are wearing body armor. If you can conceal a .50 cal Barrett, you can conceal an AR-15:D In a gun fight where I had to pick my shots carefully to avoid killing innocents, I would prefer an ASSAULT RIFLE because it is easier to maneuver and easier to shoot both effectively and efficiently than any of the above handguns. Someone who hasn't even shot a gun before can pick one up and defend themselves with it. Training yourself with it will make you that more effective with it. ................oh ..., you live in California-can you get an assault rifle? Handguns are cool too:)- I love 1911s. A lot of people I know are very happy with the Springfield Armory XD models. Whatever works for you is key.

Alloy frame 1911 for $500? Save a few hundred more and get a Kimber or Dan Wesson...If you can save $500 then you can save $1500- you won't be disappointed.

in Del Norte county the sheriff is a member of the tea party and very very pro-gun and pro-CCW, if you have to live in this state this is where you want to be lol.

the sig 2022 is my first choice or a alloy framed 1911 like a taurus pt-1911, i like 1911's the only problem is cost i dont have alot of money atm but i could always save up or something, i'd like to keep it 600$ or less, then again i could always go used as well.

Roger that on the Sheriff. Again, you are seriously lucky to be able to carry there!! But is that only in that county or is it anywhere state wide? Here in PA, it is state wide although the derrelicts in Philly think they can pass laws specific to their area which goes against PA's constitution...and they wonder why the city is a sewer...

As far as the guns mentioned, the Sig gives you tons of options for lights, holster, etc. and is plenty reliable, easy to operate etc.

As for the 1911, best piece of advice I can give you is DO NOT ADD/SWAP PARTS!! They can be excellent guns, but when people try to replace safeties and trick them out they jam. I have seen it happen plenty of times at competitions. Moron will buy a $2K 1911, start adding things and then wonder why they don't make it through a course.

The Taurus has really mixed reviews. I was going to buy one because of all the bells and whistles they come with but for a basic I went with the Stainless Mil-Spec Springfield. I paid under $300 new from Cabelas. Then again I had a coupon, gift cards, got the employee discount, and I used a bunch of points from my credit card. Great gun!

Make sure you do your homework on an alloy 1911 or any carry gun for that matter. I don't drink any kool aid just because I want something. I specifically look for complaints, problems, etc. Every gun will have a few. Some have nothing good said about them.

Personally, I like to have a gun for every situation. This is why I've got sizes/shapes ranging from a NAA mini .22lr all the way up to a 40lb.+ .50BMG. I've tried ankle, OWB/IWB, pocket, shoulder, etc. carry. Whatever you get make sure you love it because if not you'll leave it at home.

Good luck!!

Unfortunately, this is true. With all the school/mass shootings in recent times I smell another AWB in he near future. I fear this time it'll be permanent. This is why I have a bunch of stripped lowers tucked away and a bunch of AK's/AR's already on the wall.

Get em while you can because I guarantee one day they won't be for sale anymore.

The m&p is a great firearm also, only one complaint on mine.... The factory trigger on all my models were crappy so I did trigger jobs on them

Also the walther ppq

I usually carry a vintage European SIG/Browning BDA in .45ACP Anodized Aluminum Alloy Frame - it's basically the same firearm as the American SIG P220 but, it has a mag release on the butt.

Well, I can help on the "paperwork" ... I assume it was a present from your parents ... all you need is a legal "deed of gift" from them to you. That will establish ownership. The wording is relatively simple. It needs to be executed as a deed so you need two witnesses who must see your parents or parent depending upon who legally signed for the pistol execute ( sign ) the deed. You should be able to get a precedent from any college law liberary. Regardless of whether you carry this ... it would be sensible to resolve this issue for the future. If you have difficulty sorting this let me know by PM and I can help.

The pistol you have there is IMO a wonderful choice ... lol ... but if weight is key to your choice why not consider contacting Kimber and asking the price for a seperate alloy frame as used on their Super Carry model so you can swap out the frame and save 8 oz's or so ? I would rather spend $500 on a frame conversion to a superb pistol than $500 for a middle of the road plastic one ...

I started 20 years ago and carried "issued" Hi Powers initially and then a Sig P210 most of my time ... the Sig was heavier than the Hi Powers ( even fully loaded ) but about 3 times more accurate and twice the life span on "high use" ... the Sig weighed in at 39-40 oz's with a full mag ... about the same I suspect as the Kimber Super Carry with an alloy frame and full mag ... I used/still use a Milt Sparks IWB holster with a thick hide belt with a suit or a complete variety of carries from waist/bum bags to fly fishing/cargo vests with large pockets ... to heavy sheepskin coats ... depending on the weather/country where I have worked ... basically happy to dress around the need to carry the pistol rather than fit a pistol to what I might want to wear ... jeans and an IWB rig means it is a doddle to carry because of the large belt that can be worn. Suits need a thinner belt usually and sometimes I used a shoulder holster if doing a lot of vehicle use ... and summer and shorts could be done with a bum bag ...

It can easily be done

your budget makes a lightweight 1911 tough, unless you go to something like the sig p238 in .380.

Not sure where the re-released mustang is in price.

If budget weren't such an option, you would also have a great option (being a big guy) to go with an S&W 329... large frame, but only 25 ounces, but wow, firepower ;)

How about a Springfield XDS for weight, and "bigholedness."

EMP, Shield, and any J frame is my favorite ccw. Good luck in your search. Lots of good guns out there.

Congrats on the CCW!!! I carry a PM9 daily inside the pocket. It's small, flat, & prints like a wallet. It's the smallest I feel comfortable carryin' (9mm). I do however have a LCP, but it's pretty much relegated to my pajamas pistol.

Depends on the season for me, and how much clothes I am wearing. Love the Smith 642 in summer, small comfortable, fits nearly anywhere, and, well....it is a S&W. I live in Cali and it is pretty hot here in the summer, but shorts and a t shirt CAN hide a 642.

I like full size 1911 style pistols in the winter....Kimber is my fave, but like my Springfield and Para pistols too.

Many people make a lot of bones about carrying a REAL pistol. I read an article in Handgunner that basically said that the gun you have on you is the best one. No point in having a full size 1911 for carry if it is too heavy for you and you leave it in your safe.....better to have a .22 on your belt than a 1911 in the safe at home...

The trigger on my Hi-Power was horrific (probably over 8 lbs.) from the factory, a spring set from Brownells helped that situation.

^^^^^^^^^^^ You might be incredibely lucky and get a reiliable 1911 for $500.... but the odds are not in your favor. Not even close.

Booze, toilet paper and Firearms are horrible items to 'cheap-out' on. Of those three Firearms is the LAST item that I'll be cheap on.

This tool is to preserve your life, and the lives of those you love.... or maybe someone you don't even know. Spend enough money to get a 100% reliable tool with that in mind. Scrimp and save if you must... but don't settle. If your budget is $500, just keep your Glock until you can save enough for something else. A blemished Dan Wesson (finish blem...) can sometimes be found around $1200. It's all forged parts and they are hand fitted. IMO it's the best bargain in 1911's today.

I have carried my Glock 22 in the small of back for over 20 years. My full size Kimber in the same position has a smaller profile. At 6'6" and 270 either one gets lost under my sirt anyway.

talked to my ffl and i'm having my kimber tle/rl2 transfered into my name in a week! perfect carry gun fo me :D

ok then, the FFL i e-mailed got back to me, they want 105$ for the transfer in total, 35$ for the transfer, 25$ for the DROS and! get this! a 50$ storage fee..... just wow

maybe one of the other 2 FFL's can do better.....

Unless you have a lot of experience stay away from single and striker action pistols. Go with a double/single action auto or revolver. Either way practice a lot especially drawing and dry firing from your carry rig. Or better yet if you decide to get an auto loader get a gas powered Air Soft clone of the pistol you're going to carry and practice with that.

Are the other fees standard in your area? I'm not familiar with a DROS fee... is that a Cali thing? Generally you want to stay away from gun stores when doing transfers... find someone that holds an FFL and works from home. I have a guy who doesn't even charge me. Check this website http://www.gunbroker.com/FFL/DealerNetwork.aspx

Glad you are going to carry your Kimber... the $500 will be much better served buying ammo and shooting shooting shooting...

KF, Del Norte is CA, right?

Check out this sight. http://oag.ca.gov/firearms/dlrfaqs#17G

Number 18 in particular...

"What fees can I charge for handling a Private Party Transfer (PPT)?

If the transaction is a PPT, you are restricted to charging no more than $25.00 in State fees described and $10.00 per firearm for conducting the PPT. For example:

For a PPT involving one or more handguns, the total allowable fees are $35.00 for the first handgun, and $31.00 for each subsequent handgun.
For PPTs involving one or more long guns, the State fees are limited to $25.00 for the whole transaction plus $10.00 dealer fee per firearm transferred.
(PC section 12082)"

I dunno, maybe i'm reading it wrong... either way, glad i'm NOT in the Socialist Republic of CA.

Oh, KF, does CA have a non-resident permit? If so, let us know, might come visit you in Del Norte ;)
