I went over to hang out with the guys at RMJ for a while today. While I was there John got rid of the annoying not-so-durable coating on the A1 for me. I had had some major concerns as to how easily the coating was coming off and was worried about using the knife in food prep while camping or in a survival situation

This is what it looked like when I got there...

and this is what it looks like now since John bead-blasted it for me.

Soooo... I finally got to use it cooking! I used it tonight to cut up the celery and onions for a pan of chicken and dressing :) , and it handled it really well for a 1/4" / 6mm blade.

It gave this knife a whole new life for me. I reeeeeally like it a whooooole lot better now. I really love the mat finish too.

That looks GREAT! Congrats on the new life breathed into that A-1! I'm jealous now!

That bead blast finish is so appealing on it. I have to get an A1. For a big knife it sure is versatile. Great job on the knife.

Yeah, I love it too. For weeks I had been kicking myself in the @$$ for not getting a satin finish S-1 or F-1 as much as I use my knives for cooking. When John handed it back to me today I was soooo glad I had gone with the A-1. I love the size and strength, the only problem I had was the coating was coming off to easily so I didn't want to use it for food prep.

Thanks, I think so too. I like it a lot better than the satin finish on the uncoated Fallknivens.

Nice work on the stripped version. I'm with you on the coating from Fallkniven, and they would do well to try and sort it out. I have a satin A-1 and absolutely love it. It is my favorite mid length blade.

Thanks, I think John did an awesome job on it.

Hard to believe that's the coating used on the issue knives.

I would have been perfectly happy with a satin finish after seeing how this coating did...but I really do like the bead blasted finish a lot. It is definitely my favorite knife in this size range, it's an awesome tool.

Looks good Mist! Next time before ya use your knife for food prep give all of us a couple hours notice, especially if youre using it to prep steaks. :D

if this is any way to judge things, looks like my recently ordered S1 will be a pretty good kitchen knife.

the satin finish is lovely.

personally, i dislike coated blades. so coating durability issues just fly straight over my head.

I mis-read the title as "Finally Getting To Use The AH-1 for Food Prep !!" and came in here to see you making dinner with an arrowhead :D

A little paint never hurt nobody!!!!!!!! just kidding, it looks much better after being bead blasted!!!!

Thanks man, hey...I tried to go easy this time :)

John has a few S-1s that he has re-handled and they have satin finished blades. The blade of the S-1 is a bit thinner so with as much as I use my knives in cooking I was really starting to wish I had gone for one of those. I got the A-1 in a trade and the only option on the A-1 was a coated blade. I love the size and weight, and now that that the coating is gone I am extremely happy with my choice :)

Oh great...now I'm going to have to try that eh?

Yeah...as long as it isn't lead based right :D

Thanks man, I think it looks MUCH better!!

I like the look of used knives, such as the previous shot. However, seeing how easy it was coming off definitely would have held back from food usage.

And now that I see food.. I am hungry.

Did you use it to baton that celery down to size? ;).

Looks real nice, I definitley like it more than the satin and black finish, though the "used" look you had going with the finish was pretty cool. How did he protect the handle material during beadblasting? Seems it beadblasting would damage the rubber material unless protected.

G'day Brian

I am very pleased you were able to get that coating off :D

The bead blasted finish sure looks classy

Kind regards
Mick

Hahahaha, no it sliced through it like a laser :)

Yeah, I definitely like it a lot more too! Actually he just turned the pressure down I think...the coating isn't exactly a tough one.

Hullo Mick,

Good to hear from you! Yeah, that sealed the deal on this knife being my favorite knife in this size range that I have. It's one sharp, tough, well-handling piece of steel! The bead blast looks great, maybe Fallkniven should try it instead of the coating.

Looks great

Thanks Bro, I'm loving it!

.

Yeah, I think so too. John even bead blasted the lanyard hole so it all has a non reflective matt finish.

This thing definitely has a great grind, it is a perfect mix of wide grind and heavy spine that with this particular steel and handle material...along with the tang extension that make it a great survival knife with all weather/all environment capability. John is wanting me to put a micarta handle on it with better ergos...I'm still thinking about it. I would definitely love a little more contour...but I really love the knife as it is for the niche I've got it pegged for.

.

Mist, how is that A1 for holding an edge and sharpening?

What niche do you have it pegged for? I may have a need for something like this knife...a combo defensive yet back up wilderness knife. Whatta you think?
