Finally made my first sheaths.

Good job! They look great an very functional as well. They don't seem to lack anything a good sheath should have. They seem wet formed, right? Could you please elaborate a bit more how did you make them? Do you have some pictures of the process? Maybe a new thread in the knifemakers area and a link here to that thread... I leave that up to you.

I have made about four knives so far and I still don't have a single sheath... :D. I better get to work and catch up!

Great work man, i think you might have inspired me to get some sheaths made. top stuff.

Thanks guys! Your comments are really more than I could have expected, and make me feel a lot better about how they came out.

Mikel 24: To tell you the truth, I found this great tutorial before I made them and it helped tremendously.

I already had in mind to do a design nearly identical to what he does so I just kept his, but you kinda have to figure out at what point to do changes. For instance, I added the firesteel loop, and my belt loops aren't one piece with the sheath like his. I also used an adjustable groover to kinda dig a trench where the stitches will go so when it's finished the stitches lay level with the leather and not on top of it, like his.

I would just check it out and follow his instructions, and then make whatever changes you want from there, like the overal shape, your belt loops, etc. Oh, and yes I wet formed them, but I just used a modified chopstick instead of buying the forming tool.

All the other tools though are a must have, the overstitch wheel (I use 6, but 5 would be just as good if not better), the edger(I used a 3), and the adjustable groover(He doesn't use one, but I find it makes it easier to get the stitching straight, and makes for a nicer finished product).

Another thing I didn't do was die and finish mine like his. I just finished the raw leather with a beeswax/pinesap mixture. If you want more details on the finish let me know.

Anyways, here is the tutorial. Click "Tutorials" then scroll down for the western/pouch style sheath: http://www.mamut.net/gjknives/

Dang, Dude- don't be shy, just jump right in! Very nice, don't often see such artistry on someone's first try- good on you! Thanks for sharing- I know I'm inspired!

The knives look great as well- what are you, one of those natural talents? ; )

Fantastic work, a hell of a lot better than my first leather attempts. Great looking blades, most of all!

That looks really nice. Love the curves. Even the stitches on the back look nice and straight. How are the edges looking. (If people start giving you hell about your edges, coat them with edgekote!) If you ever get to Knifeforums, look in the leatherworking section there for Mike Tea. His edges are the best ever. Sands em for hours. I never had the time. But I certainly could appreciate how pretty his were!
