Finally......Ohio Gun season starts

Anyone do Still hunting? rather than from a stand? I've been coming across good sized buck left and right - when after squirrels and rabbits.

I have shot a few deer in the past by sitting on the side of a creek that runs through my property. I actually have more fun doing that. Being eye level with an animal and still being able to get a shot on them is awesome. Especially when they are only 5 yards away.

I have shot a few deer while walking/stalking but that was in my more in shaps days. Now I am more suited for sitting and letting them come to me.

Man really been slim pickins in my area. Only saw three deer all week. 1 of them was running the wrong direction really fast and the other two were already dead thanks to Jerry and Dan the Busse Buck Killing Brothers.

Sorry Garth..but keep your chin up, and remember you've already got at least one really nice one so far :)...you'll get another..;)..let me know if a drive 50 miles north of Charleston, WV isn't to far for you..would be glad to let you hunt on our farm..peace.

Yeah I know. If season ended today it has been a season I will remember for a long time. Just been awhile since I have been shutout for gun season at home. Still a few more days to go so nothing is over yet. Always have bow season til the end of January. And a muzzleloader season is in there somewhere too.

I have hunted in the Morgantown area in WV before. It really is beautiful country down there. Hopefully you guys have a great season.

From the title of the thread, I thought "Gun Season" woo hoo whatcha going to get a AR or and AK :)

Well first time in a long time I was shutout for gun season in Ohio. Oh well back to archery. Which is fine I prefer bowhunting anyway.

There is always muzzleloader season coming up too. Gonna try traditional flintlock and see what happens.

I wouldn't have the patience to sit and wait to see a deer show up all day. If I am out there for 5 hours and still don't see one I am not so sure I would ever want to try again another day. You hunters sure are tough characters!

My daughter tried it twice during youth season and never saw a deer. Now she just likes to pheasant hunt with me. Getting a kid into deer hunting in Ohio is rather tough IMO.

How is the pheasant population down your way. I am looking for a new spot to hunt.

Anybody hear any numbers of the deer kill in ohio this gun season? is it up or down? I was out of town this year and didnt get to hunt at all.

Deer hunting is definitely not for everybody, especially up here in MI where I hunt. The last few days I've hunted I have sat in 10-20F weather and only seen a single deer that was too far away to ethically shoot at in our thick woods. One of those days the wind was gusting about 25 mph with the occasional blizzard throughout the day and I was a bit under dressed so I was starting to lose feeling in my extremities. I left the woods that evening cursing deer hunting and questioning my sanity a little bit. But wouldn't you know it, I was right back out there the next chance I got so I must be crazy..... ;)

If you are using round ball for this, be prepared to have your deer run a LONG ways after you shoot them. It's long been known that round ball has very poor wounding characteristics and doesn't really have the shock value you need to put them down for the count and bleed them out fast.

The numbers were said to be down 10% here in Michigan so far, not sure about Ohio though. It sounds about right to me, the hunting has been really slow this year. I think the warm weather (up until a couple weeks ago), and the fact that most of the corn was still standing by mid November had a lot to do with it.

Jim, looks like as of Dec. 4 Ohio deer kills are down by an average of about 20-25%. That is CRAZY.

Come to Texas. You can shoot does on many places for $250 and that includes axis which to me taste far better than whitetail. Hogs on my place are free. Just bring a few bags of corn and cold mgd64.

From what most archery hunters are reporting it seems deer sightings are way down. Most are of the consensus that the population is way down.

The problem around here is there are plenty of deer but a severe lack of hunters.
